{"id":10495,"date":"2020-01-27T12:29:16","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T17:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=10495"},"modified":"2021-01-28T15:54:43","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T20:54:43","slug":"what-does-an-information-designer-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/what-does-an-information-designer-do","title":{"rendered":"What Does an Information Designer Do?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information design is an increasingly important niche in the graphic design world.&nbsp;<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike other types of Designers focused primarily on aesthetics \u2014 making something look attractive and appealing \u2014 Information Designers are coupling those principles with the ultimate goal of making information accessible and clear.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While conveying information through design dates way back to early street signs or hand-drawn maps, this field is now highly specialized thanks to the power of modern technology and data collection.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s the pleasing, efficient, visual presentation of information that can be used to drive insights and create value,\u201d explains Christopher Moorehead, Director of Information Design at leading professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you&#8217;re not creating value with it, it&#8217;s not information design \u2014 it&#8217;s a pretty picture.\u201d<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information Designers typically work for design agencies, newspapers, or professional services firms, providing design work with specific targets in mind: Corporate clients, readers, or users of a particular system, like a transit network, for example.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And their output can be diverse, from infographics in a publication to wayfinding systems in the real world.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what, exactly, do Information Designers do day-to-day?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Research and Brainstorming<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before diving into any project, there\u2019s always a period of research and brainstorming to understand how best to convey information so it makes sense to someone viewing it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe tend to think about our audiences and who we are working with, and I think it&#8217;s fundamental that we have this human-centered aspect to the data processes,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isabel Meirelles, a professor in the faculty of design at Toronto-based OCAD University.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While explaining her daily workflow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwc.design\/a-day-in-the-life-of-an-information-designer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, UK-based Information Designer Non Wood offered an example of building a wireframe infographic for a client and starting from the basic groundwork of understanding the client\u2019s goals and brainstorming key points and visual ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI find additional reading and research essential to being able to design information; it\u2019s crucial to understand content before being able to design for it,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Analyzing and Presenting Data<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major part of modern information design is analyzing and presenting data, whether it\u2019s financial charts in a report for a client or a news-based infographic in a consumer magazine \u2014 and doing so in a way that communicates the information clearly and effectively to real people.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou need to understand data. And you need to have a little interest in cognitive psychology,\u201d says Moorehead.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meirelles says this part of the role is so crucial given the massive amounts of information we\u2019re now collecting as a society, since unpacking it requires a thorough understanding of data analysis and a keen sense of ethical boundaries when you\u2019re interpreting it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moorehead says the final product of all that data-crunching needs to be beneficial, not just easy to understand. \u201cIt&#8217;s creating value for the user, but not necessarily financial value,\u201d he explains. \u201cTake wayfinding. It keeps you from getting lost and wasting time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it also needs to be accurate, he stresses.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s about using the correct chart for the type of data,\u201d Moorehead says, \u201cand don&#8217;t mislead people with data.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Applying Design Principles<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no question information design is built on traditional design principles, and modern Information Designers use those guidelines to boost the clarity of their work.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moorehead says while designing a project, he\u2019ll always use best practices stemming from those principles with a clear purpose in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Composition, for instance, is key, he says. But picking a design element like a typeface isn\u2019t just about making it pleasing to the eye, but also ensuring that the work is easy for your audience to read and follows accessibility requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Same goes with color choices.
