And when it comes to developing good habits that encourage productivity, creativity, and general success, you\u2019d be hard-pressed to find better role models than the founders of the world\u2019s top startups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Airbnb\u2019s Brian Chesky to Stitch Fix\u2019s Katrina Lake to Spotify\u2019s Daniel Ek \u2013 or even the super-famous likes of Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, or Mark Zuckerberg \u2013 when it comes to founders and CEOs, there are ties that seem to bind even the most seemingly dissimilar personalities. And in many cases, the connective tissue is in the small things \u2013 founders tend to have the discipline to set and stick to certain best practices in their day-to-day routines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that in mind, we looked at the habits that most successful founders seem to share.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>They Make the Most of Every Minute<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, founders don\u2019t have time to waste. And when it comes to maximizing every minute of their day, some have gotten pretty creative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk \u2013\u00a0 the CEO of Tesla and the mind behind SpaceX \u2013 said in 2016 that he was working 85 to 100 hours per week as he juggled both companies. How did he manage? One tactic was to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">break his day<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into five-minute slots. He\u2019s even <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">got<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0into the habit of wolfing down his lunch in just five minutes \u2013 usually during a meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s the single best piece of advice: Constantly think about how you could be doing things better and questioning yourself,\u201d he has <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2012\/04\/13\/elon-musk-secrets-of-effectiveness\/#fqb.ktmW9mqD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s not alone in finding creative ways to make the absolute most of his day. Capify CEO and founder David Goldin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schedules<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some of his most important calls during his morning commute. Anne Wojcicki of 23andme even stopped paying for parking largely because she doesn\u2019t like wasting her time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI get parking tickets all the time. We\u2019ve worked out the stats and it\u2019s 50-50 odds of getting a ticket and the cost versus time saved means I can accept it,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/parking-illegally-makes-mathematical-sense-says-23andmes-wojcicki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>They Cherish Their Calendars<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With schedules regimented down to the last detail, founders seem to have few things they covet like their calendars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Front co-founder and CEO Mathilde Collin makes her calendar a central focus of her day \u2013 and that of her team since she makes it public for all her direct reports to see how she spends her time. She\u2019s not only meticulous about logging her appointments, but also reviewing her calendar to make sure she\u2019s spending time on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am really crazy when it comes to my calendar. I\u2019m hypervigilant about making sure that I spend time on the right things,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firstround.com\/review\/the-founders-guide-to-discipline-lessons-from-fronts-mathilde-collin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Collin, whose shared inbox startup kicked off 2020 with the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announcement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a $59 million Series C funding round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I don\u2019t always know what I\u2019m doing, then I get sucked into checking my emails or answering questions instead of focusing on what I said was most important at the beginning of the week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She doesn\u2019t just log the big events in her calendar. She blocks off larger chunks of time for a \u201ctime for culture\u201d session in which she spends time considering her employees and whether they seem happy. She also books 15-minute blocks to write emails to her employees or read over recent research. She even has a 15-minute chunk of time blocked off specifically for reviewing her calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a unique time-management strategy while he was working eight hours per day at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the social-media company and pre-IPO Square. He created a theme for each day; Monday was for management, Tuesday was about product, Wednesday was devoted to marketing, communications, and growth, and so on. Not every day was devoted to work, of course \u2013 he took Saturdays off to hike and Sundays to reflect and strategize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many leaders also emphasize the importance of actually booking unscheduled time into their calendars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis enables me to get things done on the same day instead of allowing the guilt pile to build up,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4027015\/business-success-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Walter S. Scott, founder of satellite imagery company DigitalGlobe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am significantly more productive when I am not forced to multitask,\u201d he added. \u201cBy creating pockets of time in which I can work alone, I am able to accomplish tasks on the same day and leave time for collaboration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carving out alone time during the workday is a priority for Spotify\u2019s Daniel Ek as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also has another piece of advice for the bold: don\u2019t be afraid to cancel a meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just don\u2019t have as many meetings as you think,\u201d Ek <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90213545\/exclusive-spotify-ceo-daniel-ek-on-apple-facebook-netflix-and-the-future-of-music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cInstead I have a lot of me time where I\u2019m just thinking; I\u2019m at a whiteboard drawing by myself.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I have a call or another meeting, I\u2019ll just block it out if I\u2019m in the zone,\u201d he added. \u201cThat\u2019s unorthodox because it means that you\u2019re breaking social contracts, you\u2019re disappointing someone because you didn\u2019t show up. But if you\u2019re really, really focused, those are the times when the breakthroughs come.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I might go for three days and not sleep because I\u2019m focused in that moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>They Establish Rules Around Work-Life Balance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although different leaders have different thoughts on what work-life balance actually looks like, something founders seem to have in common is that they find an equilibrium that works for them \u2013 and then they establish clear rules around it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re certainly motivated by creating a happy home life, but also by ensuring that they\u2019re bringing their best self to the office each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFailure of your company is not failure in life. Failure in your relationships is,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@ev\/formula-for-entrepreneurial-success-ea0b02c504cd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ev Williams, CEO of Medium and co-founder of Twitter. \u201cWhen you don\u2019t sleep, eat crap, don\u2019t exercise, and are living off adrenaline for too long, your performance suffers. Your decisions suffer. Your company suffers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so much demand on their time from inside and outside their companies, founders typically find it helpful to set clear boundaries. Tumblr\u2019s David Karp <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won\u2019t allow<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> laptops in the bedroom. Amazon\u2019s Jeff Bezos wakes up naturally, without an alarm clock, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t schedule<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> morning meetings so he can spend time with his family. Boll &amp; Branch founders Scott and Missy Tannen make sure they\u2019re home every day early enough to have a family dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe may be co-founders, but we are also mom and dad to three daughters. No matter how hectic running a fast-growing startup is, we make sure to shut off the cell phones and have a family dinner with our girls,\u201d they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4027015\/business-success-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhile many CEOs are still going strong at six p.m., we\u2019re passing the green beans and focusing on what matters most to us \u2014 our family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s most amazing is how many of our business and marketing ideas have come from our twin eight-year-olds and our 11-year-old right at the dinner table.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, oftentimes it\u2019s having kids that prompt these leaders to finally surrender to a more sane schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the things that has been an adjustment being a new mom is that the morning is some of the most valuable time I have with my son,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/who-is-katrina-lake-the-founder-of-stitch-fix-2017-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stitch Fix\u2019s Katrina Lake. \u201cIt used to be that I would check email and Instagram first thing in bed, and now as soon as he&#8217;s up, I&#8217;m up. I&#8217;ve really appreciated the clarity and being able to start the day in a more organic way with my son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s really important for me to feel present when I&#8217;m at work, that I&#8217;m totally listening and paying attention and not worrying about what my son is doing. On the flip side, I try to bring that same level of being present at home. I want to feel totally present in everything I do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>They Take Care of Their Bodies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with impenetrably tight schedules, the world\u2019s top founders seem to share a commitment to health and fitness \u2013 and some even have some quirky workout habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google co-founder Sergey Brin is a daredevil whose athletic interests <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">span<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gymnastics, high-flying trapeze, springboard diving, ultimate Frisbee and hockey. Mint.com founder Aaron Patzer lifts weights and runs, but he also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loves<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> climbing trees \u2013 a habit he picked up when he was 3. Other Founders find creative ways to weave wellness into their days; 23andMe\u2019s Anne Wojcicki is an admitted \u201cfitness freak\u201d who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biked five miles to work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every day while eight months pregnant. Apple\u2019s Tim Cook <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wakes up<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around 4:30 a.m. daily to ensure several trips to the gym per week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this exercise isn\u2019t just about looking good. Most draw a connection between their physical health and their job performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStaying in shape is very important,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/mark-zuckerberg-workout-routine-2015-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Facebook\u2019s Mark Zuckerberg. \u201cDoing anything well requires energy and you just have a lot more energy when you\u2019re fit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI make sure I work out at least three times a week \u2013 usually first thing when I wake up. I also try to take my dog running whenever I can, which has the added bonus of being hilarious because that\u2019s basically like seeing a mop run.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>They Set Goals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founders juggle so many disparate concerns that it can be easy to lose sight of the big picture. So it\u2019s not surprising that many are fastidious about setting clear goals and reviewing them often.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, as part of his daily routine, Spotify\u2019s Ek writes out his goals for the day, week, and month, and every evening he checks to see how he\u2019s doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd then I just allocate my time (to match the goals),\u201d he said. \u201cPeople think that creativity is this free spirit that has no boundaries. No, actually the most creative people in the world schedule their creativity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Front\u2019s Collin makes an effort not just to set goals, but to communicate them to the rest of her team. At 10 a.m. sharp every Monday morning, she sends a note to her direct reports outlining her goals for the week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about telling your reports every single thing you\u2019re going to do. Rather, it\u2019s a chance to share what\u2019s top-of-mind for you, which of course should be top-of-mind for them,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firstround.com\/review\/the-founders-guide-to-discipline-lessons-from-fronts-mathilde-collin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broadcasting her goals to her team also has the added benefit of keeping Collin focused, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I start to slip or if my weeks don\u2019t ladder up to those big goals we\u2019re focusing on, that sends the wrong message.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those goals should realistic, but also ambitious. In fact, Box co-founder Aaron Levie considered it one of his main roles with the cloud enterprise storage company to keep the company\u2019s collective sights set high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cProbably the biggest value that I add to this company is reminding people to push on the scale of the opportunity \u2013 to realize that they can do something 10 times bigger, 10 times better, 10 times faster,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2015\/06\/23\/8-companies-poised-to-disrupt-their-industries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>They Keep Informed<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the swift-moving startup world, staying on top means staying on top of what\u2019s happening \u2013 and what the competition is up to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it\u2019s easy to understand why many founders start their day with a deep dive through the news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe first thing I do once out of bed is read 15 to 30 minutes religiously,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4027015\/business-success-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ahmed Albaiti, Founder and CEO of digital health innovation company Medullan. \u201cI jot down anything interesting for rumination vis-\u00e0-vis healthcare, (such as) Netflix\u2019s god mode or Jaguar\u2019s brainwave tracker. It\u2019s amazing how many dots you can connect by just reading.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AdGreetz founder and CEO Eric Frankel says he reads \u201cvoraciously,\u201d a habit he picked up much earlier in his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy first job at Warner Bros. was preparing a daily press packet without internet,\u201d Frankel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/christina-desmarais\/the-daily-habits-of-35-people-at-the-top-of-their-game.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI had to read everything physically, clip pertinent articles, copy and distribute them to execs. This job taught me the power one garners by knowing everything that\u2019s going on in business and the world \u2014 who\u2019s doing well and might be a candidate for a sale of a popular Warner Bros.
