You\u2019re not alone. Over the next few years, organizations and industries around the world will be investing millions of dollars to transform themselves for the digital economy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Est\u00e9e Lauder is a good example. The cosmetic giant recently adopted <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a \u201cdigital-first\u201d approach<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which involved: recruiting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media influencers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create digital-only content; making beauty consultants available to chat with customers on Facebook; and offering virtual reality makeup tests. This approach has helped increase <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the company&#8217;s share price by 60 percent in the past 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all companies, however, are as successful. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to consulting firm Mckinsey<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ROI from digital investments has been somewhat uneven, with companies often investing in the wrong places. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the question is, where do you invest? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital talent<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seems like a safe bet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the competition for talent is set to become much fiercer. In fact, Mckinsey believes that demand will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">far outstrip supply<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially when it comes to data professionals, with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demand 50 to 60 percent greater than the projected supply<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An effective way to counter this is to provide digital skills training for existing employees. Here too, Est\u00e9e Lauder has proven to be a good example; they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have sent teams to BrainStation for corporate digital skills training courses. Here are some reasons why it can make such a difference. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>It Can Create the Right Culture for Digital Transformation <\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the goal is to transform your company, you will need an engaged workforce, ready and willing to make changes. The problem is, you most likely won\u2019t have that. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Gallup\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State of the American Workplace<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, only 32 percent of workers felt engaged in their jobs in 2015. Add in digital transformation, and the numbers are more alarming. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/articles\/digital-transformation\/creating-the-right-company-culture-for-digital-transformation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study commissioned by Microsoft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49 percent of employees fear change when digital transformation initiatives are introduced<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">59 percent are concerned about job security where tasks are automated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39 percent feel anxious at the introduction of new technology<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shouldn\u2019t be too surprising given the unknowns involved with digital transformations. According to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people are at their best when they are both challenged <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highly skilled. If however, the challenge facing them is higher than their skill level, they will feel anxious and ultimately apathetic; a bad mix when it comes to company culture. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Microsoft study singled this out as a major challenge and said only 23 percent of companies implementing digital transformation measures were doing something to address it. Here\u2019s what they suggested to right the ship:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasizing the collaborative potential of new digital technologies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acknowledging the anxiety that change can cause and providing support<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing people to experience new technologies themselves<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making it clear how new digital technologies should fit within your environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establishing a forward-thinking culture of continuous improvement and innovation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular digital skills training can help address each of these suggestions, demystifying new technology for employees, empowering them with skills and experience, and establishing a company mindset that is ready and willing to learn new ideas and techniques. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this should also have an impact on employee motivation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Execution for Results<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hiring.workopolis.com\/article\/boost-employee-engagement-for-free\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen Lynch writes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cPeople want to grow, develop, and make progress. If you arrange their work so that they can do that, even a little bit every day, they are more likely to become motivated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Employee Training Can Help the Bottom Line<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might seem counterintuitive, but the more willing you are to provide your employees with skills training opportunities, the more money you\u2019ll make. According to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), companies that offer comprehensive training have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">218 percent higher income per employee than those with less training<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 24 percent higher profit margin <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 6 percent higher shareholder return<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One potential reason for this, apart from the aforementioned impact on employee morale and corporate culture, is that companies that provide employee training tend to be more productive. According to a study by the National Center on the Educational Quality of the Workforce, a 10 percent increase in educational development produced an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8.6 percent gain in productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>It Can Help With Future Recruitment\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials and Generation Z (they\u2019re coming!) know full well just how competitive the digital economy is, and how quickly technology can change.
