{"id":6851,"date":"2018-06-13T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=6851"},"modified":"2021-09-22T15:09:34","modified_gmt":"2021-09-22T19:09:34","slug":"4-years-in-vancouver-the-rise-of-a-tech-giant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/4-years-in-vancouver-the-rise-of-a-tech-giant","title":{"rendered":"4 Years in Vancouver: The Rise of a Tech Giant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It feels like yesterday, but it\u2019s now been four years since BrainStation started offering digital skills training in Vancouver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that time, we\u2019ve seen the city blossom into a tech giant on the rise: B.C. now has more than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100,000 people<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> working in the tech sector, representing roughly five percent of its workforce. That\u2019s more than the mining, oil, gas, and forestry industries \u2014 combined. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did it get there?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To celebrate our city (and our anniversary), we decided to take a look back.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the most important Vancouver tech industry stories from the last four years. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2015 &#8211; A Maple Syrup Mafia?<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BrainStation first started offering part-time courses in Vancouver in 2015. At the time, we operated out of Suite Genius, a co-working space in Mount Pleasant. Dubbed \u201cMount Pixel,\u201d the area was starting to see a glut of tech companies setting up shop, including Evolve Digital Media, Gener8, Switch United, The Capital, Odyssey Media Inc., and more. In fact, right around that time, Hootsuite announced plans to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build a massive tech hub in the area<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6869\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/pic-1.png\" alt=\"Hootsuite tech hub\" width=\"696\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/pic-1.png 696w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/pic-1-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit: urbanYVR<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BC Technology Industry Association (BCTIA) had also just announced the launch of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HyperGrowth,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> B.C.&#8217;s only second-stage revenue accelerator. The HyperGrowth program provides a residency in the BCTIA Innovation Hub, as well as mentorship from Vancouver tech companies like ACL, BuildDirect, and Alacrity Foundation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not long after, Sony Pictures Imageworks <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unveiled a new 74,000 square-foot headquarters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Pacific Centre mall, downtown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6878\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-2.png\" alt=\"Sony Picture Imageworks Vancouver\" width=\"696\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-2.png 900w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-2-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit: Sony Pictures Imageworks<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sony Pictures Imageworks had first opened a production office in the city in 2010, with a staff of 80. With their new office space, though, this number increased to 700 employees in B.C., and they were looking to fill 100 more positions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time the summer rolled around, a wave of acquisitions hit the local tech scene. First, Intel <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they were acquiring Recon, the local makers of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recon Jet\u2122<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> smart eyewear. Soon after, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UrtheCast Corp<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">., <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a public, Vancouver-based earth observation company, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced that it had acquired Deimos Imaging, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Spanish company that operates a remote sensing system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a few weeks later, The Match Group, the global operator of digital dating sites like Tinder and OkCupid, among others, announced it had acquired PlentyOfFish (POF) for a whopping $575 million in cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many ways, the sale of POF was a signal that something in the city had changed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, Ryan Holmes, the founder of Vancouver-based Hootsuite, had talked about creating a \u201cmaple syrup mafia.\u201d Holmes was referencing the so-called PayPal Mafia \u2014 PayPal employees who emerged from that company\u2019s sale to Ebay to fund startups like Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Yelp (among others).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6915 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/imageedit_3_8260596506.jpg\" alt=\"Hootsuite founder Ryan Holmes\" width=\"697\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/imageedit_3_8260596506.jpg 697w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/imageedit_3_8260596506-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Credit: Ryan Holmes, LinkedIn<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe PayPal buyout gave some very young, very ambitious people the confidence to try for another big win and an experienced network to fund them,\u201d Holmes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote in Fortune.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He planned to grow \u201can amazing, billion-dollar-plus company in Vancouver,\u201d so that \u201cwhen (and if) a liquidation event happens, the HootSuite team will be left with financial resources, network, and a lot of expertise \u2014 key ingredients for a Maple Syrup Mafia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sale of POF validated Holmes\u2019 instincts. After all, if Markus Frind,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">POF\u2019s famously <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work-averse founder <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could develop a business worth $575 million, why couldn\u2019t you build a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">billion-dollar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company in Vancouver?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got tech entrepreneurs. We\u2019ve got tech incubators. We\u2019ve got world-class universities.\u201d \u2014 Ryan Holmes, Founder, Hootsuite.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frind clearly believed in the local scene: following the sale of his company, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he invested $9 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Grouplend, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an online lender<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and $18 million in online furniture retailer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymax Stores Inc<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He wasn\u2019t alone. According to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BC Technology Report Card<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released by the BC Tech Association (and KPMG), early-stage venture capital financing deals increased from just over 100 deals in 2013 to 230 in 2015. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading the way was Trulioo, global identity verification service, which raised <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$15 million in financing from American Express Ventures<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This was the first investment by Amex in a Canadian startup, and the largest technology financing deal of 2015 in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not far off was PHEMI, a software provider for the healthcare industry, which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced it had raised a $12.2 million round<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of venture financing. The financing was co-led by CTI Life Sciences Fund (CTI) and British Columbia Discovery Fund (Discovery Capital). It also included participation from BDC Capital Healthcare Venture Fund and Yaletown Venture Partners (who we will hear from again). Meanwhile, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wiivv<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a wearables company that creates custom 3D-printed footwear, closed $3.5 million in seed funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, after nearly six years of development and construction, TELUS and Westbank Projects Corp. opened TELUS Garden, a million-square-foot, $750-million complex, which the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global and Mail said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cperfectly encapsulates Vancouver urbanism in 2016: designed for sustainability, touched by progressive politics, engineered for profit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6909\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Telus-garden.jpg\" alt=\"Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson at Telus Garden\" width=\"599\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Telus-garden.jpg 599w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Telus-garden-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Credit: Vancouver Mayor&#8217;s Office<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>2016 &#8211; The Province Steps Up<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 picked up where 2015 left off, with a wave of financing deals and the unveiling of new office spaces, but additional provincial resources and support kicked things up a notch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all started with Bench, an online bookkeeping service for small businesses and independent contractors, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced that it closed a $20 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Series B up-round funding. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This brought total capital raised by the company to $33 million. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right around the same time, BrainStation set up shop at 1110 Hamilton Street, in a space previously occupied by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electronic Arts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We were in good company, sharing the block with United Games, Slack, and SAP, who would, later that year, unveil <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an 11-million renovation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a 200,000-square-foot office in the same neighborhood. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cVancouver is a hotbed for tech talent.\u201d \u2014 Kirsten Sutton, Managing Director, SAP Labs Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two months later, Microsoft opened a 142,000-square-foot office in the top two floors of the Pacific Centre mall, in the process doubling their workforce in the city (to 750 employees). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a global company we are always assessing where we should be in the world, where\u2019s the talent, where\u2019s the opportunity, where the right combination of factors is to consider growing our business and our workforce,\u201d Karen Jones, then Microsoft\u2019s Deputy General Counsel, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told the Vancouver Sun<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cA year-and-a-half, two years ago we started looking at that and we looked at various locations around the world and Vancouver rose to the top.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6907\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Microsoft.jpg\" alt=\"Microsoft Vancouver Justin Trudeau\" width=\"640\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Microsoft.jpg 640w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Microsoft-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit: Microsoft<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wasn\u2019t just lip service: Microsoft had made a large investment in Vancouver, spending <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$100 million designing and building<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the state-of-the-art office space, which shortly after, would be the setting for the inaugural <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Vancouver TechFoos Challenge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (not to be confused with TechPong, the charity ping pong tournament between Vancouver tech companies). Dubbed \u201cthe biggest foosball tournament in Canada,&#8221; the competition featured 33 Vancouver tech companies, including Hootsuite, Quietly, Bench, ACL, Trulioo, and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/yqKNy07ZK7RpXMHxLhlyBB7WZ-vyRuG7gkndFaaky6eA253HjfK2J-FV1ai7Zpfs2Qb5CvqiN_Q63EvIwJPZ4cAgqtVQqu7_LCkTBjq0mSZbmT8tLv2hO383JV1EzYNArgGuXUGU\" \/><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit: Microsoft<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not to be outdone, Slack would also complete a renovation of its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21,000 square-foot\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">office; a space so dynamic and inviting, Co-Founder and CEO Stewart Butterfield now splits his time between Vancouver and San Francisco. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing at Slack, especially now, will be similar to having worked at Google, Facebook, or Apple in the mid 2000s,\u201c he said at the office\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official unveiling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6938\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/stewart_butterfield.png\" alt=\"Stewart Butterfield, Slack Vancouver\" width=\"938\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/stewart_butterfield.png 938w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/stewart_butterfield-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/stewart_butterfield-768x431.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 938px) 100vw, 938px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit: Business in Vancouver<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To build on all this momentum, the Government of British Columbia launched the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BC Tech Fund<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a $100 million venture capital fund to help local tech companies scale and grow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cB.C.\u2019s technology sector is consistently growing faster than the overall economy, making this the perfect time to catch the wave and help smaller companies join in the ranks of economy builders,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said then-Premier Christy Clark<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6908\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/christy_clark_mobify_igor.png\" alt=\"Christy Clark BC Tech Fund\" width=\"938\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/christy_clark_mobify_igor.png 938w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/christy_clark_mobify_igor-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/christy_clark_mobify_igor-768x431.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 938px) 100vw, 938px\" \/><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit: Business in Vancouver<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BC Tech Fund has $25 million earmarked for direct investment in early-stage companies, with the remaining $75 million allocated to venture capital funds, which are required to invest in B.C.-based startups. That first year, the Fund invested in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mojio<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fast-growing, Vancouver-based open platform for connecting cars. Just two months later, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mojio would announce<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the closing of a $15 Million Series A round of financing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injecting capital into the market was only part of the province\u2019s strategy for the local tech sector. They also introduced a plan to add basic digital skills to child education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPart of the goal of including coding is creating that confidence in students who feel like they can control technology, rather than just be users of it at a young age,\u201d John Jacobson, Deputy Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens\u2019 Services<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> told Betakit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with the BC Innovation Council, the province then launched the now annual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#BCTECH Summit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The event\u2019s goal was to showcase made-in-B.C. innovations, provide networking opportunities, and host keynotes on topics like fintech, big data, and more. Canada\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Startup Visa program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, helped bring Huzza Media to Vancouver. South African founders Justin Womersley and Nick Smit moved their company from Silicon Valley to Vancouver in 2016 with the help of the program, which gives permanent residency to entrepreneurs interested in starting \u00a0a company in Canada. Although no one would know it at the time, the move would soon help lure Kickstarter to Vancouver, but more on that later. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October, Quark Venture Inc., a Canadian venture capital company, and GF Securities Company Limited, an investment bank in China,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced a $500 (USD) million health sciences venture fund<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based in Vancouver. The fund, which is the largest of its kind in Canada, will invest globally in a diversified portfolio of biotechnology and health sciences companies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same month, Vancouver-based venture capital firm Campfire Capital <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">closed a new $41.1 million venture capital fund<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focused on technology-driven consumer products and retail companies. Campfire Capital is backed by over 50 consumer and retail veterans with experience at brands like lululemon athletica, Starbucks, Nike, Aldo, Zara, DAVIDsTEA and Nasty Gal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right around the same time, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mio Global<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creator of a wrist-based heart rate monitoring technology, announced $15M (USD) in funding, led by Hydra Ventures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November, Vancouver-based <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bit Stew Systems Inc. was purchased by General Electric Co<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. in a deal valued at $153-million (USD). Yaletown Partners Inc., the firm that led Bit Stew&#8217;s Series A venture-capital round in 2013, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly made $22.5-million from the sale<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 This was turning out to be a banner year for Yaletown Partners, as in April they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced a new $135 million venture capital fund <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to invest in emerging growth companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same month, BDC Capital <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced the launch of a $135-million venture capital fund<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support Canadian energy and cleantech start-up businesses. The goal of the fund is to invest in 15 to 20 new, high-impact Canadian startups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, in December, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netmarble Games Corp.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the fastest-growing mobile game company in Asia, announced an agreement to acquire the Vancouver studio of Kabam, the creator of \u00a0\u201cMarvel: Contest of Champions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6880\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-5-Kabam-1024x684.png\" alt=\"Kabam Vancouver studio\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-5-Kabam-1024x684.png 1024w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-5-Kabam-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-5-Kabam-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-5-Kabam-960x641.png 960w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-5-Kabam.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><br \/>\nCredit: Techvibes<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wall Street Journal reported that Kabam <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had received several offers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the studio in the range of $700 to $800 million, and that the sale price was in that range.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>2017 &#8211; Amazon and Beyond<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 continued the frenzied pace of financing and acquisition activity, with over $1.3 billion in capital raised. Kickstarter kicked it all off, announcing that it had acquired the aforementioned Huzza Media, which would become a Vancouver division of the crowdfunding giant, with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newly opened space in Gastown<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6881\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-six-Kickstarter.jpg\" alt=\"Kickstarter Vancouver office\" width=\"1000\" height=\"555\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-six-Kickstarter.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-six-Kickstarter-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-six-Kickstarter-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pic-six-Kickstarter-960x533.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit: Kickstarter<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an e-commerce furniture and home decor company, announced it would be relocating its headquarters to Strathcona, with a 115,000 square-foot, restored historic building at 1010 Raymur Avenue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the financing front, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision Critical<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a provider of customer intelligence software, led the way, pulling down the third largest venture capital deal in all of Canada with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$76 million VC financing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visier<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cloud-based analytics platform for HR professionals, was not far behind, closing Canada&#8217;s fourth largest venture capital financing with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$61 million financing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This brought Visier&#8217;s total funding to $94.5 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, Tasktop, a value stream management solution for software organizations, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raised $15 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a round led by AVX Partners, and joined by Austin Ventures and Yaletown Partners. However, a spokesperson for the company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told the DailyHive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this may not happen until late 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft, meanwhile, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pledged to invest<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the study of a high-speed transportation system between Vancouver and Seattle. \u201cShorter travel times between Vancouver and Seattle would support new tech partnerships and investment opportunities between our neighbors to the south and our growing tech sector here in B.C.,\u201d said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the homefront, BrainStation Vancouver continued to develop into a unique tech community hub.
