{"id":7633,"date":"2018-10-22T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-22T12:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=7633"},"modified":"2020-05-05T15:58:36","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T19:58:36","slug":"what-canadas-legalization-of-cannabis-means-for-tech-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/what-canadas-legalization-of-cannabis-means-for-tech-jobs","title":{"rendered":"What Canada\u2019s Legalization of Cannabis Means for Tech Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legalization of Cannabis in Canada has planted the seed for an explosion of new jobs across many industries, and tech is certainly no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deloitte <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/queenspark\/2016\/10\/27\/recreational-weed-could-be-a-226b-industry-study.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forecast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that legal cannabis could represent a $22.6 billion industry and add 150,000 jobs over the next several years, and with expectations that Canadians will spend as much as $7 billion on cannabis in 2019, it\u2019s not unreasonable to expect even more budding entrepreneurs and companies entering the market in search of opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For job-seekers curious about the cannabis industry, the pastures have never been greener.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSaying that there\u2019s opportunity doesn\u2019t even scratch the surface,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Prentice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, president and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ampleorganics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ample Organics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Canada\u2019s leading seed-to-sale software. \u201cWe\u2019re building a whole new industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And talented tech workers, certainly, will play a major role in that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf anything, the cannabis industry is becoming very tech-heavy, because the companies are well-capitalized, they can invest in technology, and they\u2019re brand new \u2013 these facilities were just built and they\u2019ve got the latest and greatest in there,\u201d Prentice pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor everything from using machine learning to figure out harvesting algorithms and better ways to produce the product, to the manufacturing cycle, through shipping the product out the door in an efficient way, and all the customer experience that comes after that \u2013 these are all blank canvases and a huge opportunity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the new tech jobs being created by this new, potentially massive industry.<\/p>\n<h2><b>An eCommerce Enterprise Like No Other<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Ontario \u2013 the country\u2019s biggest province and largest cannabis market \u2013 marijuana sales are still locked behind a screen, limited to online transactions until April. In the rest of the country, online sales are also expected to represent a major and lucrative portion of cannabis purchases, as they have legally for years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/british-columbia\/provinces-keep-lucrative-online-market-for-legal-marijuana-tothemselves\/article37019186\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33,000 kilograms of cannabis were legally shipped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to 168,000 patients across the country. That number will of course rise dramatically now that customers around Canada can order product directly from government-run websites and, in some provinces, private online retailers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust about every role imaginable within ecommerce \u2013 from development to people handling customer service to the analysis side to product managers, all of these aspects \u2013 is applicable to that business,\u201d Prentice said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, there are large opportunities in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/course\/online\/intro-to-web-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Web development<\/a>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As more and more retailers and other cannabis-related industries enter the fray, they\u2019ll all need responsive, accessible, and attractive digital products. But Prentice notes that his industry seems to pay special attention to this area. \u201cWithin the cannabis industry, web development and digital design is really, really popular,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are a lot of digital assets these guys are building and they need help doing it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/course\/online\/data-analytics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Data analytics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/course\/online\/search-engine-optimization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SEO<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: With so many freshly launched or expanding companies entering a new and competitive field, thorough analytics reporting will be crucial to monitor early progress and opportunities. So too will leveraging SEO to again gain prominence in a crowded atmosphere.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/course\/online\/user-experience-design\">UX design<\/a>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cannabis industry hasn\u2019t always had a positive reputation for UX Design; Fast Company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3065997\/ux-is-changing-how-we-get-high\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wondered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2016 why we are \u201cstuck in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheech &amp; Chong <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">era when it comes to user experience?\u201d But with a sudden abundance of options in the marketplace, cannabis companies can no longer afford to be cavalier about their user experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Retail Set to Explode<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It probably goes without saying that the most employment opportunities in retail, with government-operated and privately run pot shops popping up in almost every province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yes, those stores will need clerks \u2013 but they will need much more than that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe often look at retail as people standing at counters selling things, but that\u2019s not what retail is,\u201d Prentice said. \u201cIt\u2019s a complete industry. There are IT professionals, software engineers, product managers, all sorts of people doing interesting things in the retail sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a huge opportunity for tech in retail right now.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Digital Marketers With Special Savvy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we covered the need for specific digital marketing skills and specialties while discussing eCommerce, it\u2019s worth circling back to make one critical point: marketing cannabis is not like marketing any other product. It\u2019s harder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.ca\/DocumentViewer\/en\/42-1\/bill\/C-45\/royal-assent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill C-45<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 or the Cannabis Act \u2013 has clear and quite restrictive rules around marketing cannabis. Marketers aren\u2019t allowed to make false or misleading claims of course, and they also can\u2019t create an erroneous impression about the quality, concentration, composition, potency, purity, merit, or health risks of their products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legislation goes even further, prohibiting the marketing of cannabis in any way that could be appealing to young people, that could encourage its consumption, that depict a person, character or animal, or that communicates price or distribution information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThose restrictions are very heavy. It\u2019s basically: \u2018Don\u2019t promote it to an end user and don\u2019t induce them to buy it.\u2019 It\u2019s almost like the government is wagging their finger, saying you should feel guilty for buying this,\u201d said Prentice with a laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCompanies have to be very creative and proactive in finding ways to work within the regulations and still provide a customer outreach experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Start-up Shake-up<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we look to the future, most figure the truly exponential growth is yet to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI do think we\u2019re at the tip of the iceberg,\u201d said Alison McMahon, founder and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cannabisatwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis at Work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI think that we are going to see a lot of job creation ahead. Once we\u2019re six months or a year post-legalization, it\u2019s going to be really interesting to see what the consumer demand in Canada really is, and I suspect there will be a number of businesses that will emerge as we come to understand the products Canadians want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For one thing, the industry is ripe for innovation and ambitious entrepreneurship. Even south of the border there\u2019s been evidence of the ascension of the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dmz.ryerson.ca\/canadas-tech-entrepreneurs-cashing-in-on-cannabis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weedpreneur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d with companies including Casa Verde Capital, tracking platform Leaklink, and point-of-sale company Greenbits raising major funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ample Organics, of course, is a great example of a homegrown success. The Toronto startup has become Canada\u2019s No. 1 cannabis software platform, a complete business solution that helps users manage everything from growing and production, to client management to sales, packaging and fulfillment, and finally to quality assurance and reporting, all in a system built for Canadian regulations. The platform has processed more than one million orders for 70 percent of Canada\u2019s licensed producers, amounting to more than 33 million grams of cannabis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prentice thinks other similarly creative entrepreneurs will soon be drawn to the industry, which will only further the rise in cannabis careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m trying to emphasize as much as possible that the field is wide-open for entrepreneurs,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s a really exciting thing, because that doesn\u2019t happen every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Developers, designers, data scientists, and (much) more have reason to cheer. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":7636,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[533],"tags":[148,607,419,544,609,243,88,122,100,608],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v18.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>What Canada\u2019s Legalization of Cannabis Means for Tech Jobs<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"With marijuana now legal in Canada, a whole new industry is being created.
