So to answer the question in our title, yes! A product management certificate is worth it, and many Product Managers (or aspiring Product Managers) are enrolling in certification programs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a closer look at why a product management certification is worth your time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Demand is High \u2013 And Salaries Are Too<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems that good Product Managers are hard to find.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, the Wall Street Journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coveted-job-title-for-m-b-a-s-product-manager-1456933303\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Product Manager was the most coveted job title among M.B.A. graduates, and life as a product manager has only gotten better since. CBS News recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/media\/9-best-jobs-in-america-for-2018\/2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it among the Top 10 best jobs in America, noting the abundance of openings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Hired\u2019s 2017 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hired.com\/state-of-salaries-2017\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global State of Tech Salaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Product Managers brought home the highest average salary offers of any tech role at $138,000. Further, that rate was growing \u2013 in the U.S., the number was up 5.9 percent in 2016 compared to the year before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if these positions are so lucrative, why aren\u2019t they luring the right candidates? In part because attitudes and technologies around product management have changed rapidly in recent years, and it can be difficult to find candidates who understand those shifts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am often asked: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do I hire product managers?\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/on-human-centric-systems\/the-past-and-future-of-product-management-79db51fc1549\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Matt LeMay, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Management in Practice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPart of the reason for this, I believe, is that many high-profile and high-tech products have publicly failed to live up to their expectations. The idea that shipping software \u2013 any software \u2013 is itself a holistic end goal is much harder to support now than it was five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd as venture capital becomes more interested in companies that are revenue-focused and truly understand their market, there is an appreciable shift away from \u2018just shift software\u2019 and towards \u2018ship the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">software.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good certificate course will help develop that high-level thinking, teaching you how to identify market opportunities, user needs, and which products customers will actually buy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Product Managers Have a Lot of Responsibilities<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Managers tend to sit at the nexus of technology, business, and user experience \u2013 or, as Marty Cagan wrote in his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/INSPIRED-Create-Tech-Products-Customers\/dp\/1119387507\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1513633105&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=inspired\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">book<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspired, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the goal of a Product Manager is to \u201cdiscover a product that is valuable, usable, and feasible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the UX sphere, Product Managers need to understand the marketplace, their customer base, how to employ usability testing, and how to identify opportunities. On the business side, Product Managers need to know how to consider the organization\u2019s strategic goals, the value of the product, and how to maintain internal interest and buy-in on the product\u2019s potential. Finally, Product Managers need to be technological leaders with a deep understanding of development processes, necessary resources, and technical limitations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a lot to juggle, which is why many in the field recommend certification \u2013 not just to help you master those various skills, but also to make you confident and comfortable with the processes that help steer a product from conception to completion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI highly recommend going through some form of training before starting a new job in product management,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartsheet.com\/key-considerations-and-expert-opinions-value-product-management-certification\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kevin Mease, senior vice-president worldwide support at MicroStrategy. \u201cYou need a framework\/template to center your thinking.
