{"id":8057,"date":"2019-01-07T17:13:01","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T22:13:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=8057"},"modified":"2020-05-05T15:29:17","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T19:29:17","slug":"4-examples-of-design-led-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/4-examples-of-design-led-companies","title":{"rendered":"4 Examples of Design-Led Companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, the best design decisions can be so subtle and clever that they\u2019re almost invisible \u2013 and that\u2019s especially true when it comes to creating a seamless and intuitive user experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that in mind, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the companies leading the way with savvy, influential, and innovative UX design decisions \u2013 and show how a focus on design has shaped their business. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>ASOS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What began as a London retailer has now become a global brand, thanks in part to consistently smart design choices and a seamless, cross-channel user experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On mobile, desktop, or its apps, ASOS opens with a persuasive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitcatcha.com\/blog\/how-to-craft-your-value-proposition-convince-users-to-take-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value proposition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and prominently advertises its free worldwide shipping. The retailer features more than 850 brands, but a simple navigation system allows shoppers to find exactly what they\u2019re looking for in only one click. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every clothing item features its own \u201cvirtual catwalk\u201d video and the retailer\u2019s fit assistant is far more user-friendly than the grids favored by most eCommerce companies \u2013 here, users are asked to enter their exact height and weight, the shape of their chests and waists in graphic form, and to provide their age to get as close as possible to the perfect fit. ASOS even added a visual search tool in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the company reported revenues north of $2 billion in the six months leading up to February 2018 \u2013 a 27 percent increase over the same period the year before \u2013 executives credited the focus on user experience and vowed to innovate further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we focus on product and customer experience, and if we move with velocity, we can continue to win,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/news\/asos-ceo-if-we-move-at-pace-well-continue-to-win\/7028760.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CEO Nick Beighton. \u201cIt is core to our DNA and it is core to our customer base. We will continue to move as quickly as we can to keep ahead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Airbnb<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would have seemed ludicrous once, but many of us have now become comfortable renting out our homes or staying in the homes of total strangers? That\u2019s largely thanks to Airbnb, and the company has no shortage of energy and resources into effective UX design so that users feel, well, at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether on desktop, mobile, or its app, Airbnb offers an intricate system of filters to allow users near-total control over the type of property they\u2019re looking for, including price, amenities, size or host language. Availability is usually updated instantly, the company\u2019s sturdy two-way rating system gives users confidence, and booking is a breeze \u2013 a far cry from the cumbersome payment systems that typified old-fashioned home share websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that the company\u2019s digital offerings have to be usable and attractive anywhere in the world \u2013 Airbnb supports more than 25 languages and operates in 191 countries \u2013 they employ a huge team of UX designers to ensure their products look good everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDesign is taken very seriously here. It\u2019s on the same level as product management or marketing,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiga.org\/airbnb-app-in-house-ux-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alex Schleifer, VP of Design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of our design work is very typographic, and we think a lot about colors and language and white space,\u201d he added. \u201cWe always ask, can we show this to anyone and have them understand and use it? It\u2019s a little bit of art and a little bit of science.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Netflix<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many ways, user experience has always been at the very core of Netflix\u2019s success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, the streaming company disrupted an entire industry \u2013 and put the likes of Blockbuster out of business \u2013 by allowing users an on-demand viewing experience from the comfort of their couches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNetflix understands that when consuming media, you are at the mercy of one of the most important rules of interface design: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t make me think<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d designer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.prototypr.io\/how-netflix-started-the-ux-revolution-6ff3ea60bfa3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Ramedia has written<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To achieve that zen-like user experience, Netflix organizes its desktop experience with a global navigation bar at the top of the homepage. Scrolling the page reveals content categories arrayed in carousels, with thumbnails that expand upon hover \u2013 and even begin airing a short clip or trailer after a few seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small touches like that abound on the company\u2019s various platforms. Netflix even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intotheminds.com\/blog\/en\/netflix-uses-algorithms-to-personalize-images-to-your-very-taste\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personalizes the image<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advertising each piece of content to tailor it your taste. Is it any wonder that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2017\/08\/22\/80-percent-netflix-shows-discovered-recommendation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Netflix\u2019s watched content is based on the company\u2019s recommendations?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company has also refused to rest on its laurels. As recently as July, Netflix announced a spate of upgrades intended to improve the TV user experience, including a smoother search function and easier access to your saved titles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile this may feel like an obvious update to some, validating that this TV experience was better for our members took extensive research, testing, and technology improvements,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.netflix.com\/en\/company-blog\/see-whats-next-on-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stephen Garcia, Netflix\u2019s Director of Product Innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlong those lines, we will continuously learn from our members and evolve the TV experience so that it gets even more simple, fun and easy to find the stories that make Netflix great.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Apple<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a company is as large and ubiquitous as Apple, it\u2019s easy to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/nyc-design\/3-rules-apple-has-forgotten-about-design-7834ae1c4b30\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">snide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about some of their recent decisions (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/9\/14\/16306298\/apple-iphone-x-screen-notch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cugly\u201d notches <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the lack of an earphone jack). It would be hard to argue, though, that Apple does not have a focus on design. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Mark Rolston, the Senior Vice President of Creative at Frog Design, a \u00a0firm that worked with Apple from 1982 to 1988, Steve Jobs \u201cwanted to elevate Apple by using design,\u201d to turn the company into \u201can undisputed leader in industrial design.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, this meant developing the \u201cSnow White\u201d design language, which included things like rounded case corners and \u201czero draft\u201d molding, which helped differentiate Apple from PC makers. This focus on design, however, would end up informing the way the entire company operated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverybody there is thinking about UX and design, not just the designers. And that\u2019s what makes everything about the product so much better . . . much more than any individual designer or design team,\u201d Mark Kawano, a former Senior Designer at Apple, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3030923\/4-myths-about-apple-design-from-an-ex-apple-designer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told FastCompany<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple\u2019s attention to UX is noticeable across the board \u00a0\u2013\u00a0 from the austere simplicity that distinguishes its physical retail outlets to its online store, which breaks down various product lines so neatly it would be difficult to get lost. Consider, for example, the product page for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/imac-pro\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iMac Pro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which includes a subtle parallax scrolling effect before clearly breaking down every feature of the computer in an easy-to-read presentation \u2013 one that looks equally stylish on mobile and desktop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another good example pointed out by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uxplanet.org\/5-examples-of-brilliant-ux-design-8e847bf0bcc0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX Planet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the way Siri carefully specifies what you mean if you schedule something \u201ctomorrow\u201d if it happens to be after midnight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple has also found crucial lessons in its mistakes. Consider the rollout of the Apple Watch. In 2016, the IDC was forecasting 14 million units sold, with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/16\/03\/17\/idc-predicts-14m-apple-watch-sales-in-2016-growing-to-31m-in-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49.4 percent share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the smartwatch market. That sounds like a runaway success, but at the time, the company was openly discussing how it could improve the product\u2019s user experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe found that we actually really overshot the goal,\u201d Craig Federighi, Apple\u2019s Senior Vice-President of Software Engineering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interaction-design.org\/literature\/article\/learn-6-fundamental-ux-smartwatch-lessons-that-apple-learned-the-hard-way\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, describing how battery life had influenced much of the design. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple discovered that users cared less about having a battery that lasted all day, and more about speed, accessibility, and focused apps. They went back to the lab and returned with the Apple Watch Series 3, which was considered a major leap forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Inspired?
