After all, the biotech industry can trace its roots to the Boston area \u2013 Cambridge specifically \u2013 with Beantown standing alongside San Francisco as the first places biotech began gathering major momentum in the 1980s and \u201890s. Now, the Boston area houses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massbio.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 1,100<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> biotech and biopharma companies, academic centers, and life-science organizations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amazing thing, then, is that even with Boston\u2019s deeply established history, the Massachusetts city\u2019s biotech industry has never been hotter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We took a closer look at this &#8220;BioBoom&#8221;\u00a0 and what it might mean for the city\u2019s future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jobs Abound, and Employers are Competing Over the Best Candidates<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A look at the sheer number of people employed in Massachusetts\u2019 biotech industry illustrates just how rapid the recent growth has been, fueled largely by the vast expansion of the city\u2019s biopharma industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biotech industry jobs grew by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28 percent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2008 to 2017, and by 4.3 percent in that final year alone. Industry employees \u2013 a number that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surpassed 70,000<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2018 \u2013 averaged a steep annual wage of $149,731, meaning the Massachusetts biotech workforce brought home $10.4 billion total.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that environment, those working in Boston\u2019s biotech industry aren\u2019t just finding high wages and abundant opportunity, but other incentives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Globe<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, perks offered in the local biotechnology sector include 100 percent company-paid health insurance, unlimited vacation, free catered lunches, and money to pay back student loans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neontherapeutics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neon Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a startup developing cancer vaccines, offers its employees Friday afternoons off in the summer, weekly messages, extensive dental insurance, and a \u201clife services concierge\u201d who can offer help with all sorts of tasks, like finding a dog walker or a solid financial planner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we make a job offer to an employee, they have three other offers that they\u2019re considering,\u201d Teresa Regan, Vice-President of Human Resources at Neon, told the Globe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe do the benefits because it\u2019s competitive, but also because we think it\u2019s the right thing to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Venture Funding is High and Still Rising<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venture investment in Massachusetts biopharma companies in 2017 was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$3.1 billion <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 meaning 37 percent of all biopharma VC dollars went to companies in that state. In the first two quarters of 2018 alone, the biopharma industry raised another $2.7 billion. Combining biopharma with life sciences companies, Massachusetts-based organizations raised $3.6 billion in VC investment in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of recent examples to choose from. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/relaytx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relay Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently secured $400 million in Series C financing, Medicare Advantage business <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devoted.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devoted Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> raised $300 million in a Series B round in fall 2018, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuxinextcode.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WuXI NextCODE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a global platform for genomic data \u2013 announced the completion of $200 million in Series C financing in November 2018. And in October, Bain Capital and Pfizer announced the creation of the Boston-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerevel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cerevel Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, devoted to developing drugs for central nervous system disorders, with a $350 million funding commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although significant investment pours in from outside \u2013 in 2017, 60 percent of investment in Massachusetts biopharma companies came from out of state \u2013 it helps that there are well-established venture capital firms locally. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fprimecapital.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F-Prime Capital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (formerly Fidelity Biosciences), for instance, was among the first VC companies to focus on \u201cbiopharmaceuticals, medtech, and healthcare IT\/services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some investors view the Boston market as a well-kept secret.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoston often gets dismissed as a has-been startup city. But the successes are often overlooked and don\u2019t get the same attention as less successful, but more hypey companies in San Francisco,\u201d Blake Bartlett, a partner at Boston-based venture firm\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/openview-venture-partners#section-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenView<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, told\u00a0Crunchbase News.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Major Exits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most high-profile recent exits in Massachusetts have been focused in the biotech industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a deal that was deemed to be \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/06\/28\/amazon-to-acquire-online-pharmacy-pillpack.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already shaking up the drugstore industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Amazon acquired the online pharmacy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pillpack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PillPack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for just under $1 billion in June 2018. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernatx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderna Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also recently made headlines with a historic IPO in which it raised $600 million \u2013 the largest amount in biotech history \u2013 to set up a roughly $7.5 billion valuation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other major recent acquisitions and IPOs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teladoc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teledoc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spent $440 million to acquire digital healthcare company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bestdoctors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best Doctors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2017, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubiustx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rubius Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> raised $241 million in IPO in July 2018 \u2013 a record until it was surpassed by Moderna.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>More Companies Are Coming to Town<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seemingly, Boston\u2019s BioBoom is only attracting more biotech companies to town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many big pharmaceutical and medical companies \u2013 including Genzyme, Novartis,\u00a0and Baxter \u2013 are doing as Pfizer did and looking to Boston\u2019s startups to handle R&amp;D for a lower cost. Unsurprisingly, Boston was also announced as the home for the still-unnamed but closely watched new healthcare venture from Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, over <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/files.massbio.org\/file\/MassBio-2018-Industry-Snapshot-FINAL-8-29-18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 million square feet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of commercial lab space has been added to Massachusetts from 2009 to 2018, representing a 71 percent increase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government support has helped that growth along. In fact, in 2017, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/files.massbio.org\/file\/MassBio-2018-Indust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 10 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all National Institutes of Health funding went to Massachusetts organizations, making the state by far the leader in funding per capita at $396 \u2013 far more than second-place Maryland at $266. Five of the top six NIH-funded hospitals are in Boston, and Massachusetts receives 57 percent of all NIH funding to independent hospitals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That base of hospitals \u2013 as well as the Boston area\u2019s litany of famed educational institutions \u2013 presents a glut of opportunities for research, another reason Massachusetts is such a popular location for biotech.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What it Means for the Future of Boston<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s natural to be skeptical about whether this level of growth can be sustained, but there are plenty of encouraging signs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercebiotech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FierceBiotech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> publishes the Fierce 15 list of the world\u2019s most promising biotech companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018\u2019s list, six of the 15 companies were based in the greater Boston area, including <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/arrakistx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrakis Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beamtx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beam Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jnanatx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jnana Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kronosbio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kronos Bio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pandiontx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pandion Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.compasstherapeutics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compass Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was hardly an anomaly; Boston-area startups claimed six of 15 spots in 2017 and 2016 as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Boston\u2019s biotech and biopharma industries will face the same growing pains that challenge any city where rapid growth occurs, those on the inside are optimistic that the foundation is in place for Boston as a biotech hub for a long time to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe often hear of obstacles that might face large companies when considering Boston as a growth platform \u2014 high costs for labor, taxes, and rent. But Boston has shown that, in the global competition for biotech and pharmaceutical jobs, we can compete successfully,\u201d wrote biomedical entrepreneur <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christoph Westphal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOther cities that vie with us \u2014 San Francisco, London, Paris, the New York\/New Jersey region, cities in Switzerland or Germany \u2014 often have more significant hurdles of their own. In health care, we have shown that Boston can be a key global player.
