{"id":8303,"date":"2019-02-19T16:41:56","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T21:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=8303"},"modified":"2020-05-21T12:24:51","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T16:24:51","slug":"how-doctors-without-borders-is-leading-the-charge-for-people-analytics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/how-doctors-without-borders-is-leading-the-charge-for-people-analytics","title":{"rendered":"How Doctors Without Borders is Leading the Charge for People Analytics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We often think about data analytics as a means for learning more about our customers, personalizing our products, or streamlining our processes.\u00a0But what if data can be used not just to lower our costs and increase our profits, but to improve the way people work? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizations are calling this use of data people analytics, and it\u2019s starting to gain popularity as a way for Human Resources (HR) teams and management to make data-driven decisions about their workforce.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8304\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8304\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-8304\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC032099-246x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"244\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christophe Lefebvre<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We spoke to Christophe Lefebvre, Field Human Resources Manager for Doctors Without Borders and alum of BrainStation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/course\/online\/data-analytics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Data Analytics certificate course<\/a>, about the rise of people analytics and how this is helping him influence positive change in the HR field. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom my perspective, people analytics is about leaders making better people decisions with human capital,\u201d said Lefebvre. \u201cBy taking the lead in this field and being an engine inside my organization, I will innovate and inspire others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Doctors Without Borders Uses Data<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Lefebvre, Doctors Without Borders has begun to use data across all facets of the business, from fundraising, to communications, to human resources. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThrough an innovation fund, the organization has built <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/msf-transformation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/People-Analytics-Summary-2018.09.27.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an analytical tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that aims at predicting our future workforce needs, enabling us to project and prepare new approaches for our recruitment and career development activities,\u201d said Lefebvre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is more that can be done to help data to really make an impact. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur long-term ambition is for HR data and analytics to inform and drive our day-to-day decision making. To help us define evidence-based and efficient HR strategies by applying predictive analytics that will affect recruitment, workforce planning, performance measurement, compensation, retention,\u201d said Lefebvre. \u201cThe skills and practical tools I learned during the BrainStation course will help me define and implement those solutions further.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Putting People Analytics into Practice<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People Analytics sounds enticing; the notion of using data to improve hiring practices and increase retention appeals to executives everywhere. But how do we put it into practice?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, we have to make some changes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[There needs to be a] change of mindset. While the HR role has moved from a supporting to a business partner role in the past two decades, HR still needs to move beyond a restricted view of data and use it at a more operational level so that it can solve business problems,\u201d said Lefebvre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second change that organizations need to make is to their employee skill sets. Data analysis skills are crucial to the success of implementing people analytics and ultimately improving the quality, culture, and longevity of your workforce. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cData competencies are not necessarily the skills that you will find available within an HR team, which is often more focused on people skills, emotional intelligence, listening, and negotiations,\u201d said Lefebvre. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is part of the reason why Lefebvre decided to take BrainStation\u2019s accelerated Data Analytics course.
