{"id":8485,"date":"2019-03-14T17:30:04","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T21:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=8485"},"modified":"2019-03-20T09:36:02","modified_gmt":"2019-03-20T13:36:02","slug":"diversity-in-leadership-building-a-culture-for-women-to-succeed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/diversity-in-leadership-building-a-culture-for-women-to-succeed","title":{"rendered":"Diversity in Leadership | Building a Culture for Women to Succeed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This month, we\u2019ve written about <a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/women-in-tech-advice-from-5-female-leaders\/\">female leaders in technology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/5-female-tech-trailblazers-who-are-changing-the-industry\/\">tech trailblazers who are leading the way for diversity<\/a>, and the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/why-is-gender-balance-so-important-for-companies-and-how-can-they-improve-it\">gender balance in the workplace<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity in leadership and promoting a culture for women to succeed was the central topic of our Leadership in Technology panel discussion this week, which hosted panelists from leading organizations including Wealthsimple, TELUS, feminuity, Ernst &amp; Young, Adobe, and Shopify. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of our panelists are working tirelessly to promote inclusion and diversity in their organizations and brought unique perspectives to the discussion. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Championing Diversity in Organizations<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe should be building workplaces where people feel like they can bring their whole selves to work. You don\u2019t have to assimilate in order to be successful in the industry<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Danica Nelson, Senior Marketing Communications Manager at TELUS. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making a change in your organization takes work, and Leen Li, CFO of Wealthsimple, reminded the panel that it won\u2019t happen overnight. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are doing a lot of research and trying to implement different initiatives to really improve the ratio. It\u2019s a tough job, and it requires constant improvement day-to-day,\u201d said Li. \u201cI\u2019m really making sure that I can be the advocate at the senior executive level to promote and advance not just women but people of color at Wealthsimple.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Analyzing the Data<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to diversity, particularly gender-related diversity, many organizations are making an effort to collect data and track their progress. But is it that simple?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our panelists expressed that while numbers are important, you always have to dig a little deeper with your datasets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe capital market space is traditionally a white-male-dominated industry, so we track the stats of getting more women into these spaces,\u201d explained Aziz Garuba, Manager, Advisory Services at Ernst &amp; Young. \u201cBut then I ask the question: have we segregated that data by ethnicity? If we\u2019re just saying \u2018we\u2019re hiring more women\u2019 without really understanding where we have gaps, we shouldn\u2019t be giving ourselves a pat on the back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Yee, Head of Enterprise Digital Marketing at Adobe Canada, reiterated this point. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe aggregate numbers may be there on paper, but when you actually peel back the onion, you may not be doing a good job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shavonne Hasfal-McIntosh, Diversity &amp; Belonging Lead at Shopify, put it simply:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s dangerous to be data-driven versus data-informed. Have a hypothesis, see what the data tells you, but always question it. Qualitative research is so important and so powerful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Taking Action<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We talk a lot about promoting diversity, inclusion, and gender balance in organizations, but what happens when it comes to the implementation aspect? Dr. Sarah Saska, Co-founder &amp; CEO of feminuity, pointed out a key issue in the way businesses are approaching diversity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight now we\u2019re seeing a lot of really thoughtful leaders focus on recruitment, and I\u2019m excited that we\u2019re seeing such a keen focus on [this]. But we\u2019re not seeing an equal amount of attention being paid to the retention piece,\u201d said Saska. \u201cFolks are so concerned about getting people in the door, that they\u2019re not investing nearly as much time and energy worrying about what that lived experience is going to be like for people once they are in the organization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to have a diverse organization, we need to build a culture where women, and all minorities, feel that they can succeed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our panelists each shared their advice on ways to take action and make a change:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPut together some kind of unconscious bias training for everyone in the organization, particularly hiring managers.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Garuba.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t just rely on the company, you have to take the reigns and play a role.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d &#8211; Yee<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInvolve professionals looking at your company strategy from an outside perspective to give a comprehensive plan.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d &#8211; Li<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have the energy to educate people, sometimes you will find they are quite receptive to learning and to seeing where they\u2019re going wrong.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Nelson<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we design employee referral programs, we like to put a caveat with some language that encourages employees to refer someone who is unlike them, whatever that means. We encourage employees to talk about why this person is different than they are and the value they see in that person helping to shape the existing culture.\u201d &#8211; Saska<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many different ways to start addressing diversity in an organization, but the most important thing is that a change is being made. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTry something,\u201d said Hasfal-McIntosh. \u201cMake sure that you create a safe space for people to be able to give you feedback so that you have a strong feedback loop. And then involve and invite people to the table who you\u2019re trying to solve for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Six industry leaders give advice on promoting
