If that\u2019s the case, check out our primers on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/what-is-ux-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX Design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/what-skills-does-a-ux-designer-need\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skills UX Designers need<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Ventures\u2019 Braden Kowitz <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> developing a skill list. He lists the following what he believes to be the most critical skills: research, product design, copywriting, interaction design, visual design, and UI development, while other skills \u2013 like coding, for instance \u2013 he doesn\u2019t see as crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mistake he says companies commonly make is to look for a candidate who possesses <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of those skills \u2013 for instance, a junior Designer who can sketch wireframes, design mockups, craft the company\u2019s logo and brand, write UI copy, run usability studies, prototype, and write production-ready HTML and CSS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I read a post like this I think, \u2018Great! There\u2019s a team that understands all the skills they\u2019ll need!\u2019 But I also think, \u2018They\u2019re looking for a unicorn \u2013 a magical Designer who can solve all their problems.\u2019 It\u2019s too bad unicorns don\u2019t exist,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, you will need to really prioritize and figure out which skills are essential to your organization and which might be \u201cnice-to-haves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce you make some tough choices and pick the granular skills you need on your team, you\u2019ll be able to write a much better job listing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you\u2019ll be better prepared to evaluate design candidates (you) interview.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Write a Killer Job Posting<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To lure the right candidate \u2013 and make sure that your organization is a great mutual fit \u2013 you should be as specific as possible in the breakdown of your expectations and your candidate\u2019s duties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be clear on what their day-to-day tasks will be \u2013 for instance, prototyping, designing wireframes, or research. If you\u2019re looking for a UX Designer to work on a specific project or product \u2013 for example, if you\u2019re looking to improve your app\u2019s gestures \u2013 put that in the posting. Likewise, it\u2019s worth letting your candidates know if you have very specific goals or desired outcomes, such as increasing user retention by a certain percentage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is also the time to boast about your culture and unique environment. Further, don\u2019t be afraid to have a bit of fun with your posting \u2013 UX Designers are creative people, and might appreciate a less-formal approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Ask the Right Questions<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ellen Twomey, the owner of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX Simplified<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@EllenTwomey\/hiring-a-ux-designer-6-5-questions-to-ask-b8511324ec21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six-and-a-half questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she recommends asking all UX Designer job candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a technical point of view, she recommends asking for an invisible problem that the candidate solved to improve user experience, how the candidate captures the product vision and displays it tangibly on the screen, what the candidate sees as the UX Designer\u2019s role, and what tools the candidate uses in her or his work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, on that last question, she warns against being hung up on whether the Designer\u2019s preferred tools are the exact same that you use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a Designer knows one tool and not another, this should not be a major factor in your decision to hire,\u201d she said. \u201cIf a UX Designer knows one wireframing tool, they will easily be able to pick up a different tool. There are very few exceptions to this rule.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to BrainStation\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/research\/digital-skills-survey-2019-results\/design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 Digital Skills Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 66.2 percent of UX Designers use Sketch for wireframing; so it might be worth asking to see one of the candidate\u2019s Sketch files and look for how well it\u2019s organized, if the layout elements are properly spaced, and how consistently the elements are named.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other good questions to consider asking your UX Designer include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s a great product interaction you\u2019ve had recently?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you conduct user research?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you tell me about a project in your portfolio, and give me some KPIs?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s a product you didn\u2019t design that you think has a wonderful experience, and why?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why did you choose UX as a career?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What else are you passionate about?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That last question, of course, is simply an opportunity to see more of your would-be Designer\u2019s personality and help you to evaluate whether they would be a good cultural fit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also certainly worth asking for evidence of your candidate\u2019s commitment to lifelong learning. If possible, ask for a real project \u2013 one that is live somewhere \u2013 and spend some time interacting with the product, ensuring that its design is modern and responsive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of portfolio you\u2019re looking for should include case studies with a clear problem, research, sketches\/wireframes and feedback from user testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some experts warn against becoming too hung up on the visual aspect of your candidate\u2019s portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile it may seem like common sense to rely heavily on a UX Designer\u2019s portfolio to determine their overall skill, this is often a mistake that can have a negative impact on your project,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Keith Koons, owner of the digital marketing firm <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upstate Synergy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter all, the most important criteria for hiring a UX Designer is their ability to make decisions based on user feedback, and that may lead to some styling choices that you wouldn\u2019t personally prefer. If the decisions appeal to customers, though, then it\u2019s the right choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe only way to know for sure if certain design elements were UX-inspired is by asking about the designer\u2019s process and what results were achieved because of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many experts also like to include a whiteboarding challenge as part of the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI highly recommend it,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jill DaSilva, CEO at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Karma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cYou can see what their process is and have them show you with the sample app or product idea. Ask them to think out loud as they work through the challenge. You\u2019ll be able to see how they think and communicate. You\u2019ll also get a sense of personality and communication skills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Offer a Competitive Salary<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned, the market for hiring UX Designers is competitive, and you won\u2019t have a shot at your star candidate without a good salary. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Indeed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, UX Designers in the United States make an average annual salary of $93,619.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That might sound steep, but companies investing in UX Design are frequently reporting a robust ROI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is real proof in the marketplace that good design matters,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> David Krovitz, Experience Director at PwC. \u201cWe are seeing large enterprises like IBM, GE, and Fidelity invest millions of dollars in their internal design teams, because innovation matters and Designers have proven to be that engine of innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhatever your product or service, if it competes in an open marketplace filled with elegant, intuitive, social, mobile, personalized experiences, you will need great design in order to succeed,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is definitely a great time to be a Designer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to brush up on your team&#8217;s design skills?
