They\u2019re responsible for leading the team that creates, distributes, delivers, and solves problems as a product comes to life. As we\u2019ve written about, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/what-does-a-product-manager-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Managers are \u201cthe unsung heroes of the tech world.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why we\u2019re profiling four Product Managers who are leading the way in the growing fields of robotics, machine learning, virtual reality, and blockchain. Here\u2019s what they\u2019re working on and how they\u2019re paving the way for new technology.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Erin Teague &#8211; YouTube&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erin Teague<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wants you to get up close and personal with a band of gorillas, or experience a live concert without leaving your living room. That\u2019s because Teague is YouTube\u2019s Head of Product for Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Digital Skills Survey<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just over 10 percent of product management professionals have experience in VR and AR, which&nbsp;<\/span>makes&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teague a leader in a small but <a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/course\/online\/product-management#utm_source=BSTNblog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=Blog_4trailblazingPMs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">growing field of product management<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt the time this (VR and AR) was this crazy thing. Our team was just starting, it was&nbsp; not even clear what this meant,\u201d said Teague at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 Product Leader Summit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hosted by Spero Ventures.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m6lfbgSMMOk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teague joined YouTube in 2016, and the company launched YouTube\u2019s VR app that same year. Since then, she has continued to lead development on a product that demands constant change, as VR tools and technology are developed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe technology is going to continue to evolve, what mattered a year ago probably won\u2019t be true today,\u201d said Teague. \u201cVR is still very early, but we believe the future is bright.\u201d &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b>Donna Romer &#8211; IBM Watson AI<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-medium wp-image-8854\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Donna-Romer-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Donna Romer, IBM Watson AI\" class=\"wp-image-8854\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Donna-Romer-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Donna-Romer-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Donna-Romer-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Donna-Romer-109x109.jpeg 109w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Donna-Romer-100x100.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Donna Romer, IBM Watson AI<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked which trends will change product development over the next five-to-ten years, more than 80 percent of respondents said artificial intelligence (AI) will have an impact<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donna Romer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Vice President of Product for IBM Watson AI, is sure to agree. As the leader of the team that delivers Watson\u2019s AI, Romer is part of a small but growing group of AI Product Managers, and she recently wrote about what that means on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@donnabella\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-an-ai-product-manager-d67dc97da2e1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs (Product Managers) we like to start with drawing out the UX, but really, don\u2019t start with wireframes. Instead, AI (Product Managers) first create\/collect a data set that represents the problem space. Only then do they ask an Engineer to iterate on the problem to deliver 90 percent accuracy for the problem to be solved,\u201d wrote Romer. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romer goes on to list questions AI Product Managers should be asking when starting a project, and it should come as no surprise that each question mentions data: Did you collect data first? Is your data different? He believes that product management in this space is not unlike other products. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to understand the landscape and know how every team working on the product interacts with each other. This principle is helpful for managing any product, especially a product that uses new technologies such as the blockchain where the speed of change is tremendous,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chronicled.com\/what-its-really-like-to-be-a-product-manager-in-the-blockchain-industry-e23f843acc2b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Kulkarni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to understanding the technology behind blockchain (he says it\u2019s essential to understand full-stack solutions), Kulkarni emphasizes the importance of interpersonal skills to be able to communicate effectively with Engineers, Executives, and customers. He also stresses that Product Managers working in blockchain need to be consistently learning. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019ll always have more to do and more to learn. That\u2019s just a fact. But it\u2019s where most of the excitement lies for a Product Manager in the blockchain field,\u201d says Kulkarni.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><b>Danielle Th\u00e9 &#8211; Wattpad<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Th\u00e9 thinks machine learning will become part of every business in the future. She\u2019s the Product Manager for Machine Learning at Wattpad, the social storytelling platform that\u2019s using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lilyrugo\/2019\/01\/30\/wattpads-new-book-publishing-branch-uses-machine-deep-learning-to-find-stories\/#3dafce167bf8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStory DNA\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to identify trends and predict bestsellers or the next blockbuster.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe that we\u2019ll see a movement towards Data Science that is similar to what happened with the Internet. In the early days, only some businesses believed they needed to be online \u200a\u2014 \u200anow every business is online in one way or another,\u201d wrote Th\u00e9<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@daniellethe\/my-new-strategy-for-learning-data-science-47625c856abb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about her experience learning Python as a Product Manager. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Th\u00e9<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is also passionate about making the digital world easy to understand. More than 9,000 people are subscribed to her YouTube channel featuring videos about topics like SQL, web cookies, and of course, machine learning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Rh9t8CKqi-c\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe companies who don\u2019t leverage their data will fall behind those who do.
