{"id":8893,"date":"2019-05-15T15:57:19","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T19:57:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=8893"},"modified":"2020-05-21T11:07:34","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T15:07:34","slug":"how-to-prepare-for-the-future-of-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/how-to-prepare-for-the-future-of-work","title":{"rendered":"How to Prepare for the Future of Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s been a lot of talk about a looming robot uprising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not the science fiction kind, where man and machine are battling it out with the help of Terminator cyborgs. Instead, it\u2019s the career kind, where jobs around the world are increasingly at risk of a technological takeover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One 2017 study from McKinsey Global Institute looked at hundreds of occupations across nearly 50 countries \u2014 and found roughly one-fifth of the global workforce, or around 800 million workers, will lose their jobs to automation by 2030. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study from Oxford University, back in 2013, determined nearly half of all American workers will likely see their jobs automated over the next two decades, with some roles more at risk than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what jobs will \u2014 or won\u2019t \u2014 survive the rise of artificial intelligence? And are there any ways to ensure your own career isn\u2019t taken out Terminator-style by new technology?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Some Jobs are Likely to Disappear<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, one thing is clear, according to Maura Grossman, a Research Professor at the University of Waterloo\u2019s computer science department: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAI is likely to be transformative in virtually every sector of the economy,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During prior industrial revolutions, blue-collar workers were most impacted, Grossman adds. But she says the \u201cfourth industrial revolution\u201d will impact workers across-the-board \u2014 from truck drivers to knowledge workers, like lawyers, doctors, and journalists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that doesn\u2019t mean certain roles aren\u2019t more likely to disappear or change amid the rise of automation and AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s been said that jobs that don\u2019t require too much creativity or intuition are the most at risk,\u201d says Frank Rudzicz, an Associate Professor in the University of Toronto\u2019s computer science department and director of AI for Surgical Safety Technologies Inc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Oxford researchers, you can plot the likelihood of jobs being computerized based on those variables. The team found roles like telemarketers, dishwashers, and court clerks are all more at risk than jobs requiring more creative skills and social intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAutonomous vehicles and drones are likely the first technologies that will replace jobs, both in transportation and delivery services, but, even so, there will still be a need for dispatchers,\u201d says Grossman. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe truth is, most jobs will change in the same way that weavers gave way to loom operators, and dishwashers gave way to dishwasher operators.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Certain Jobs Are More Likely to Evolve<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the widespread impact of automation, most fields will still need the input of humans, Grossman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means plenty of jobs will change without vanishing entirely, she explains, including knowledge workers, with machines tackling the easily-automated portions of those roles, freeing up humans to \u201cdo more with the same or even less effort.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of dental professions retaining some aspects of their roles, like in-person consultations and performing surgeries, while leaving scan analysis up to AI. Or writers flexing their creative muscles on their next novel, while using technology to crank out press releases or website copy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPerhaps comedians and athletes are irreplaceable,\u201d Grossman adds. \u201cThere will always be a need for the human touch in hospice care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rudzicz, however, says there may not be anything that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a human can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAI is already infiltrating the creative domain \u2013 writing coherent short stories, producing art, or composing music in the style of any composer you like,\u201d he says. \u201cAll jobs are replaceable \u2013 it\u2019s just a matter of time, maybe a long time, although I don\u2019t know if a truly intelligent AI would go into politics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How to Ensure Your Career is Safe From Automation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With AI and automation touching seemingly every job and industry to some degree, how can workers stay relevant, or even use these technological advancements to their advantage?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Grossman and Rudzicz say it all comes down to education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be necessary for people to engage in lifelong education because technology will evolve so rapidly that the tool being used one day, will be completely different from the one deployed five or ten years after that,\u201d Grossman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BrainStation\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/course\/machine-learning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machine Learning courses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance, are one way to stay abreast of current technology and what it means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second key piece is actually trying AI out for yourself, according to Rudzicz, by using online tools like TensorFlow or PyTorch to help build your own little systems. \u201cBy building these yourself you can get a sense as to what these things can actually do and what they cannot,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line? If you\u2019re flexible and can adapt to change quickly, you\u2019ll thrive \u2014 but anyone who\u2019s rigid might not, Grossman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSoft skills like good judgment, empathy, collaboration, and leadership, will never go out of style,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The job market is changing
