{"id":8967,"date":"2019-05-24T16:59:59","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T20:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=8967"},"modified":"2020-05-07T13:00:21","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T17:00:21","slug":"6-things-we-learned-at-collision-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/6-things-we-learned-at-collision-2019","title":{"rendered":"6 Things We Learned at Collision 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collision 2019 has come and gone, and the massive tech conference did not disappoint, with thousands of attendees, exhibitors, and speakers from some of the largest and most innovative companies in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s impossible to sum up the entire conference, but here is a snapshot of some of the things we learned at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collisionconf.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collision 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Technology is Impacting the World (for Better or Worse)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This month, we are hosting a series of panel discussions on the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/event\/topanelmay2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data science for social good<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which touch on the different ways companies are using data to affect change. A number of Collision talks also pointed to the impact technology is having on a societal level, and it wasn\u2019t always pretty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For evidence, look no further than a session with Mona Siddiqui, the CDO of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which focused on tech\u2019s role in the spread of misinformation, particularly when it comes to the pro-disease (or anti-vax) movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, with the online marketplace of information, it\u2019s difficult to separate fact from opinion, which can lead to the rapid spread of false information. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs more and more of us use social media as the primary source of information, we need to really think about the responsibility of some of these companies around how they\u2019re differentiating information from opinion,\u201d she said, adding that it can\u2019t all be left up to private companies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a responsibility in many different parts of this equation \u2013 responsibility from a social media company perspective, responsibility from individuals, taking the time to actually look at information in more thoughtful ways,\u201d explained Siddiqui.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8970\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8970\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8970 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed.png\" alt=\"Mona Siddiqui\" width=\"600\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed.png 600w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed-300x113.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mona Siddiqui<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linda Boff, GE\u2019s Chief Marketing Officer, also brought up that sense of responsibility and purpose and explained how it can be a source of ongoing career motivation. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;To work in a company that\u2019s involved with tech, where the outcomes are driving healthcare, in areas where affordability is an issue, driving power to the third of the world that doesn\u2019t have electricity&#8230;these things are a way of looking at technology that don\u2019t get the halo that they should.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Talent is a Fundamental Aspect of Digital Transformation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hot topic across the conference was digital transformation, and more specifically, how talent is fundamental to that process. In fact, Robert Alexander, CIO of Capital One, highlighted talent as a critical aspect of the company\u2019s seven-year digital transformation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think the talent is probably the most fundamental part of this transformation and the hardest to do,\u201d said Alexander. \u201cIf we think winning in this business is about being a great technology company, then we\u2019ve got to have the talent of a great technology company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trouble is, finding skilled talent can be quite difficult, and numerous executives cited frustration with the outcomes of the traditional educational model. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t believe that we\u2019re getting the talent coming from universities or academia that has the skill sets that we need for the future,\u201d said Karen Walker, CMO of Cisco Systems. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Tech Industry is Rethinking the Role of Social Media<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way or the other, conversations almost always turned toward social media, and the impact it was having on our day-to-day lives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, Actor and HITRECORD Co-Founder Joseph Gordon-Levitt discussed the negative influence social networks were having on creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere isn\u2019t really a way for the business model of those media tech platforms to measure and monetize a meaningful creative experience &#8230; you start thinking while you\u2019re singing or writing, is this going to get a lot of likes? How many followers is this going to get me? And I think that\u2019s not really good for the creative process,\u201d Gordon-Levitt said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3-Qyh75OTRc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equally critical was Journalist and Recode Co-Founder Kara Swisher who, while claiming that Facebook had \u201cruined democracy,\u201d argued that social networks had to take greater responsibility for the power and influence they had.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Stamos, an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University and the former Chief Security Officer at Facebook, disagreed, and while not completely absolving the social network, he argued that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that issues with Facebook were actually \u201cissues with humanity itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnti-vaxxers, and crazy parents today recommending bleach, this is the collective decision making of millions of people when you give them a freedom they haven\u2019t had before,\u201d Stamos said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swisher also held a session with Ev Williams, a Co-Founder of Twitter and Medium, whose views on social media fell much closer to hers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSocial media amplifies all the bad aspects of humanity,\u201d Williams said, adding that he was, nevertheless, hopeful for the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a better version of social media to be invented. I don\u2019t know if that will happen incrementally \u2026 or if it will happen with completely new paradigms to come around. But it will happen,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Data is Everything (and Everywhere)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From self-driving cars to improving the banking industry, the conference made clear that data is driving innovation and decision-making across industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8969\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8969\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8969\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/0N5A1124-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Karthic Bala\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-8969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Karthic Bala<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mass media company Cond\u00e9 Nast, for example, used data to create an entirely new health vertical, which had nothing to do with their brand\u2019s focus on fashion, lifestyle, and travel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhy health? Cond\u00e9 Nast is not a health company, it\u2019s not a healthcare media company \u2013&nbsp;it\u2019s got nothing to do with health,\u201d explained Karthic Bala, Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s CDO. \u201cBut what we looked at when we looked at our database, is our users wanted healthcare information.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cond\u00e9 Nast has since leveraged first-party data to create content that aligns with the wants and needs of its users. It\u2019s not easy to do, but it\u2019s clear that data-driven decision-making can have a huge payoff for businesses, particularly in media. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bala summed it up in the simplest, most effective way: \u201cEverybody has data, everybody claims that they have data, but it\u2019s about how you use that data, that\u2019s the most important thing.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wisk, a beverage intelligence platform for bars and restaurants, is focused on bringing data to the restaurant industry in a way that\u2019s usable and makes sense to business owners. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe question is, how do we make that information easy to digest? I think that\u2019s the main challenge,\u201d said Angelo Esposito, Co-Founder and CEO of Wisk. \u201cYou can find a lot of reporting tools that can find every report possible, but again that\u2019s reactive, so the question is how do we become proactive and bring it to you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On that note, there continues to be increased scrutiny on how companies are using data. Powerhouses like Facebook and Google, for example, are working to increase efficiency by collecting data on the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;human experience. This, however, raises questions about the level of power consumers have over their personal data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venture Capitalist Roger McNamee sounded the alarm at Collision. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t just sleepwalk into a world where we\u2019re stuck with only the information Facebook and Google choose to give us,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8971\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8971\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8971\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Collision2019-BrainStation-Thursday-5-2-1024x460.jpg\" alt=\"Wisk Collision 2019\" width=\"1024\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Collision2019-BrainStation-Thursday-5-2-1024x460.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Collision2019-BrainStation-Thursday-5-2-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Collision2019-BrainStation-Thursday-5-2-768x345.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Collision2019-BrainStation-Thursday-5-2-960x431.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wisk Collision 2019<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><b>Everyone is Talking About Diversity and Inclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Minister Justin Trudeau set the stage for conversations about diversity and inclusion on Collision\u2019s opening night, when he spoke about the role immigration plays in Canada\u2019s tech industry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAccess to talent obviously comes from immigration and it comes from training young and educating Canadians right,\u201d Trudeau said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A number of execs touched on these points and suggested promoting diversity and inclusion by incorporating purposeful practices into your hiring efforts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have the opportunity to have diversity be part of your hiring plans and your sourcing as well, and because you have so many different skill sets you can pull people from different walks of life,\u201d said Bharat Vasan, the CEO at PAX Labs, Inc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe number one tip I have is to have fifty-fifty sourcing at the top of the funnel, because if you don\u2019t have diversity at the top of the funnel, as you get further down it becomes very hard to have that be part of your hiring practices,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aforementioned Linda Boff also spoke about what it means to be inclusive in a large-scale organization like GE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve thought a lot about diversity and inclusion, and they\u2019re really two different concepts. I\u2019ve been guilty of thinking that I was doing all the right things by speaking to women\u2019s groups inside the company. I\u2019m proud of that, I do think people need communities, but I\u2019ve really come to believe that inclusion is inviting people with different views into the tent,\u201d said Boff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sairah Ashman, the CEO of Wolf Olins, took this one step further, claiming, \u201cYou can\u2019t have disruption without diversity. You really have to care about the thing you\u2019re trying to bring to life in this world,\u201d said Bharat Vasan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSurround yourself with good people, because that makes the journey worthwhile,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t know if you\u2019re going to succeed or fail, but you\u2019re going to learn a lot from the market and you\u2019re going to learn a lot from the people around you.
