{"id":8987,"date":"2019-05-28T09:25:31","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T13:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brainstation.io\/?p=8987"},"modified":"2021-01-28T17:34:22","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T22:34:22","slug":"how-organizations-are-using-data-for-social-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/how-organizations-are-using-data-for-social-good","title":{"rendered":"How Organizations are Using Data for Social Good"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data keeps getting a bad rap.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook being in hot water over data breaches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> impacting millions of accounts to DNA analyzer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23andMe raising issues about privacy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and consent while selling ancestry-based vacations, a lot of data-based companies are making headlines for all the wrong reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But against that backdrop, there&#8217;s another far more comforting trend: Companies using data for social good.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe&#8217;re in a digital age \u2014 an age of data,\u201d says Alexander Watts, director of insights at BlueDot. \u201cAnd I think companies have a duty to not just use their data for profit but to find all the different avenues their particular data sets can have a social contribution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watts is among the panelists at BrainStation\u2019s upcoming event, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/event\/topanelmay2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data for Social Good in Toronto: Organizations with an Impact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on Thursday, May 30 at our Toronto campus. This is the third and final Data for Social Good panel BrainStation will hold this month, with all proceeds from the events being donated to non-profit organizations with a focus on education.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BlueDot\u2019s mission? Using data analytics to help the world become more prepared for, and respond more quickly to infectious diseases. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watts says that this lofty goal requires using diverse data sets from different institutions and streams, along with event-based surveillance, to get a sense of where disease outbreaks are happening.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMaybe it\u2019s an influenza outbreak in China, or Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo,\u201d he says. \u201cThe next step is to see if the disease will fade out, or if it will spread and cause more public health problems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through data analysis, BlueDot is able to make those predictions and figure out the best approach to combat an outbreak \u2014 be it more mosquito spray, an educational campaign, or a vaccination program. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BlueDot is just one of several organizations striving to use data for ethical, societal benefit rather than for profit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Data for Good Around the World<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DataKind, for instance, is a New York-based charity that helps <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> charities work more productively and quantify their achievements for donors, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/international\/2012\/10\/20\/data-huggers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Economist reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The organization recently collaborated on a project that uses public data sets to offer an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interactive look at American neighborhoods\u2019 smoke alarm usage rates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the level of risk in hopes of preventing deaths and injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The powerful uses of data don\u2019t stop there, in fact, organizations with a focus on data for good are gaining traction across the globe. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Egypt, a coalition of women built <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HarassMap<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a platform using anonymous, crowd-sourced data to alert users to geographic areas where there are instances of sexual harassment taking place. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city of Melbourne, Australia is making the world a cleaner place with its high-tech garbage bins, which feature <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-time data analysis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to figure out if there\u2019s garbage overflowing on a regular basis. This data is then used to determine ideal bin locations and collection timing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These data-focused organizations are making it increasingly clear that data can have a positive impact on the world. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Using Data to Measure Impact <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Erin Blanding, another panelist at BrainStation\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/event\/topanelmay2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upcoming event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, data is an integral part of her work as head of global program innovation and development for WE, a child advocacy charity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWE is using data for social good by being able to understand the social impact our programming and products has on the lives of people, domestically and internationally, in tangible ways,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one instance, that meant using the data collected from domestic WE Schools programming \u2014 service-learning educational programming in more than 18,000 schools in the US, Canada, and the UK \u2014 to determine how the schools are assisting more than 3,000 charities and causes annually and contributed more than $265 million worth of impact. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Moving Forward With Data<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as more organizations strive to use data for ethical, world-changing means, Watts says there are still challenges in actually accessing enough data in the first place \u2014 in part, thanks to companies using personal data for profit, sometimes to the chagrin of users.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are so many privacy concerns,\u201d he says. \u201cEven for us, it remains a hurdle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blanding stresses that, overall, data will be collected more and more, with AI and emerging technologies playing a bigger role in the automation and digitization of our society. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTherefore, those on the leading edge of that adoption will be able to have a say in how its implemented and if we \u2014 as leaders in social change \u2014 want it to be used as a force for social good, we need to embrace it, think about it critically, and continue to stay on the front line of experimentation and testing to ensure it can be a positive contribution for our people and planet,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a world where companies are profiting off of data, some organizations are changing the game.
