The market for sports analytics is expected to reach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/press-release\/sports-analytics-market-is-expected-to-grow-at-a-cagr-of-401-during-2016-2022-to-touch-an-aggregate-of-397-billion-by-2022-top-players-sap-se-stats-llc-opta-sportradar-accenture-2018-09-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost $4 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 2022, and teams around the world are racing to find a competitive advantage. &nbsp;The way we play may soon never be the same. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a closer look at how four sports have been radically changed by big data \u2013 and how forward-thinking teams leveraged new tools to reach greater heights of success.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Baseball<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who has read or seen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moneyball <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knows that baseball and the Oakland Athletics were at the forefront of the sports analytics movement \u2013 using data to identify players whose statistical contributions were being undervalued by traditional metrics \u2013 but the league has come a long way since then.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KWPhV6PUr9o\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Houston Astros won the World Series in 2017 \u2013 the first championship in their 56-year history \u2013 they credited a fulsome commitment to analytics and data-driven decision making that began when general manager Jeff Luhnow was hired in 2011. Luhnow has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/how-the-houston-astros-are-winning-through-advanced-analytics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that, at the time, the team was among the least sophisticated in baseball when it came to analytics, and it took years to get everyone necessary on board.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, he made believers out of the rest of the organization, and the Astros began using analytics to determine everything from game-day lineups to defensive configurations to scouting. They\u2019ve also managed to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly boost the performance of their pitching staff<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by using data to change pitch selection, location, and even the height of the pitchers\u2019 release points.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBig data combined with artificial intelligence is the next big wave in baseball, and I think we\u2019re just starting to scratch the surface,\u201d Luhnow said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much being captured. There&#8217;s radar and video at every facility in baseball now \u2026 we know what every person is doing on the field at all times. We know what the bat and the ball are doing on the field at all times. We now have information we didn\u2019t dream we\u2019d have a few years back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Houston\u2019s data-driven success seems like an anomaly, consider this: following their World Series Win, Astros manager Alex Cora left for a job with the Boston Red Sox. As <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">part of the interview process<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Cora peppered Boston management with questions about their analytics approach, ultimately arguing that they needed to be doing a lot more with data.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Management bought in, and the Boston Red Sox won the World Series the next season.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Soccer<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, venerable English soccer side Lincoln City F.C. made a historic and unlikely run to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since the Victorian era, becoming the first non-league side to reach that stage in more than 100 years. And big data played a big role.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Lincoln-City-e1559933627430.jpeg\" alt=\"Lincoln City\" class=\"wp-image-9061\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the root of their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analytic strategy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a video review tool called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hudl<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is used by 150,000 teams in more than 35 sports worldwide. Lincoln recorded all their matches and uploaded the footage to Hudl, which automatically generated statistical reports. The game could be broken down into playlists focusing on specific play types \u2013 penalty kicks, for instance \u2013 and coaches could tag those clips with comments or illustrations. Hudl\u2019s game reports provided both raw and aggregated data, linked directly to video.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Players could access Hudl\u2019s reports and video wherever they were, and management could even track how much time players are spending on the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would say that the video analysis we conduct using Hudl has certainly played an important part in our cup run, as well as our position in the National League,\u201d the team\u2019s performance analyst, Glenn Skingsley, told the Independent.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook, it may only be 1 percent of the reason behind our recent success \u2013 or it may be a lot more \u2013 but we really believe that the analysis we\u2019ve performed before matches has helped the team an awful lot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Football<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018, it wasn\u2019t just a win for a long-suffering fanbase \u2013 it was a win for the big-data analytics community.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/jeff-lurie-trophy-e1559933650198.jpg\" alt=\"Jeff Lurie \" class=\"wp-image-9064\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the NFL began to embrace the big-data revolution, it was the forward-thinking Eagles who were at the head of the pack. The team, which has its own analytics department, hired <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EdjSports<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to provide predictive and prescriptive tools for game planning, play calling, and post-game analysis. Using more than 20 years of play-by-play data, EdjSports\u2019 EdjFootball division assesses a team\u2019s Game Winning Chance at any moment of the game and helps coaches make decisions accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the biggest impact this approach has had on strategy can be seen in fourth-down play-calling. Where conventional, risk-averse wisdom would compel most teams to punt the ball on fourth downs, the Eagles\u2019 analytics team instead found that in many of those instances, they would have had a better chance at winning the game if they had gone for a first down or a touchdown.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it could seem random when the Eagles decided to strike, in fact, those situations were often decided before the start of the game or even the start of the season. Two members of the Eagles\u2019 analytics team even communicated with coach Doug Pederson during the games.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result? The Eagles went for it on fourth down 26 times during that regular season \u2013 second only to the Green Bay Packers \u2013 and converted a league-high 17 of those attempts. According to ESPN, the Eagles scored a touchdown or field goal on 13 of the 18 drives in which they converted a fourth down, and when they went for it and didn\u2019t convert, the opposing teams didn\u2019t score a point on the next drive.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the decisions still lay with Pederson, but it\u2019s hard to argue with the results.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe can do whatever he chooses to do, but when you have the resource of data, why not?\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/02\/sports\/football\/eagles-analytics-super-bowl-lii.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a no-brainer.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big data has affected the NFL in plenty of other ways. As Los Angeles Rams executive Kevin Demoff <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turfshowtimes.com\/2018\/2\/24\/17047456\/2018-mit-sloan-sports-analytics-conference-numbers-focused-league-football-analytics-la-rams-demoff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, data is practically the only tool used now in deeper stages of the draft.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe really let our analytics group lead us in the sixth and seventh round \u2013 and especially undrafted free agency, they run it all,\u201d he said. \u201cYour scouts may have seen these guys one time, but increasingly teams are looking to analytics to fill the gaps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the most recent 2018-19 season was the first in which teams were able to see not only their own player tracking data but the full league\u2019s worth of information. Some predicted this change to lead to an all-out analytics arms race in the NFL<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMake no mistake, it is going to be a separator in terms of your competitiveness, both in personnel and on Sundays,\u201d one NFL executive <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/24445965\/player-tracking-data-next-step-nfl-analytics-revolution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ESPN. \u201cMy belief is it will drastically help teams compete if they can embrace it and integrate it. I think it will be more of a separator early.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Basketball<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s true that the addition of Kevin Durant turned the Golden State Warriors into an unstoppable dynasty, their golden run is rooted in something less showy: numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Warriors\u2019 front office was an early adopter in the world of basketball analytics, which has since taken the entire league by storm. They were one of the first six teams \u2013 along with Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Boston, and Oklahoma City \u2013 to install <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SportVU<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cameras at their home arena after the technology was introduced in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The camera system collects data at a rate of 25 times per second for every player on the court, allowing teams to track speed, distance, and possession data, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stats.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STATS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then leverages to present performance metrics to players.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe really didn\u2019t know what we were going to do with that information, but we were going to figure it out,\u201d owner Joe Lacob <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/the-cauldron.com\/understanding-the-data-the-golden-state-warriors-and-the-role-of-analytics-37c1b387c7b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt took us a while to understand the value, but we knew that was going to happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the team\u2019s analytics guru, Sammy Gelfand, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/07\/sports\/the-left-side-of-steve-kerrs-brain.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sits behind the bench<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during home games as the Warriors\u2019 coaches rely on him for his in-game video skills and statistical insights. After every game, Gelfand spends two hours assembling a report that features passing numbers, situational results (for instance, how the Warriors defended pick-and-rolls) and overall offensive and defensive evaluations. He also compiles preview reports on the team\u2019s next opponent.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden State is unique in the visibility of their analytics specialist, but not in how heavily they rely on the numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Houston Rockets are another famous case. Led by General Manager Daryl Morey, the Rockets perhaps more than any other team, transformed themselves around the notion that three-point attempts from the corner of the court \u2013 where the distance to the basket is smaller compared to the top of the key \u2013 were the most valuable shots in basketball. Conversely, long two-pointers were considered the least efficient shot.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rockets have now <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led the NBA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in three-point attempts for six straight seasons. In each of the past three years, they\u2019ve broken their own record for the most three-point field goals in a season.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"920\" height=\"478\" src=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Houston-Rockets.jpg\" alt=\"Houston Rockets three-pointers\" class=\"wp-image-9067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Houston-Rockets.jpg 920w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Houston-Rockets-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Houston-Rockets-768x399.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not just the Rockets. The game has been transformed by the three-pointer, and that owes to data analytics.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow you look at a stat sheet after a game and the first thing you look at is the threes,\u201d San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/bulls\/news\/how-has-three-point-shooting-changed-game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIf you made threes and the other team didn\u2019t, you win. You don\u2019t even look at the rebounds or the turnovers or how much transition D was involved. You don\u2019t even care. That\u2019s how much an impact the three-point shot has and it\u2019s evidenced by how everybody plays.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBA teams continue to look to data to gain an advantage. Israeli startup RSPCT uses a sensor attached to the backboard to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analyze and track every shot<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the arc of the ball and the exact location that the ball hits the basket. Meanwhile, 14 of the NBA\u2019s 30 teams now use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KINEXON<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, wearable tech that tracks players\u2019 movements on the court and allows coaches, players, and executives to monitor player performance and health through data. Analytics also play a role in when teams decide to rest players \u2013 Toronto Raptors fans will be familiar with the \u201cload management\u201d strategy used to manage star Kawhi Leonard\u2019s minutes this past season.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taken together, you can see that data has had a profound impact on the sport.&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBA commissioner Adam Silver<\/span>&nbsp;summed it up this <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1104922\/data-analytics-have-revolutionized-the-nba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">way<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnalytics are part and parcel of virtually everything we do now.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a relatively short period of time, big data has become a big business in the sports world.
