Golden State was one of the first six teams \u2013 along with Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Boston, and Oklahoma City \u2013 to install\u00a0SportVU\u00a0cameras, which collect data on every player on the court to measure their speed, distance, and possession, and to overhaul their play style to align with what the numbers indicated about shot efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like all good analysts, the Raptors observed and learned, and they have their first NBA title to show for it. Attend live classes and interact with Instructors and peers from anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p id=\"lead__button--margin\"><a id=\"lead__button--hover\" class=\"lead__button\" href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/book-call?utm_source=Blog&amp;utm_medium=BlogPost&amp;utm_campaign=lead_bookCall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speak to a Learning Advisor<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Finding Under-appreciated\u00a0Players<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the other historical milestones, the Raptors became the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/therookiewire.usatoday.com\/2019\/06\/14\/toronto-raptors-nba-championship-lottery-player-draft-selection-kawhi-leonard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first team to win an NBA championship without a lottery pick on their roster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Leonard \u2013 who was drafted 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overall \u2013 ranking as the player selected the highest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9229 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/d1jxdyr49kipv5.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Fred-VanVleet-300x276.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Fred-VanVleet-300x276.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Fred-VanVleet.jpg 652w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of the playoffs, they got major contributions from a range of unsung players, including Most Improved Player winner Pascal Siakam (drafted 27<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overall), Norman Powell (46<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overall), and Fred Van Vleet, a guard who went undrafted and whose 14 points per game and stifling defence on Steph Curry were crucial to the Raptors\u2019 win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although much of that scouting success should be credited to Raptors President Masai Ujiri and his staff\u2019s eye for talent, the team has also had help from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/blogs\/think\/2019\/06\/toronto-raptors-use-data-driven-command-center-on-path-to-nba-finals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data-driven \u201cwar room\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> developed by the iX division of IBM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company developed what it says is a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/services\/ibmix\/case-studies\/toronto-raptors.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-of-its-kind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d solution that uses IBM Watson cognitive technology to transform the Raptors\u2019 talent evaluation, creating a platform that could analyze data, including team and league statistics, player information, social-media sentiment, and contracts in real time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt provides a consolidated, comprehensive view of all player information,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/blogs\/think\/2019\/06\/toronto-raptors-use-data-driven-command-center-on-path-to-nba-finals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Farhang Farid, an Associate Partner at IBM iX.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organization used the platform for the very first time at the 2016 NBA Draft \u2013 the same year they managed to snag both Siakam and VanVleet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A Forward-Thinking Head Coach<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017-18, the Raptors won 59 games and finished first in the Eastern Conference before losing in the second round to Cleveland. Head coach Dwane Casey won his first Coach of the Year award for his work, but Ujiri nevertheless decided to make a coaching change \u2013 he replaced Casey with rookie head coach Nick Nurse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a major risk and, of course, it worked out. Nurse\u2019s even-keel demeanor and savvy in-game adjustments were integral to the Raptors championship win, and unsurprisingly, Nurse was a believer in analytics long before most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His first break in the NBA came from the Houston Rockets and General Manager Daryl Morey, a famously devoted proponent of analytics who was once a Statistical Consultant. After Nurse led the Iowa Energy to a championship in the NBA\u2019s developmental D-League in 2010-11, Morey hired Nurse to coach Houston\u2019s developmental franchise, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There, Morey empowered Nurse to experiment with the basketball philosophies he had derived from his own data analysis. Under Nurse, the Vipers won the championship in 2012-13.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI went to Houston to learn,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/carrollspaper.com\/Content\/Local-News-Archive\/Sports\/Article\/Nick-Nurse-Creating-success-through-experimentation\/1\/451\/26572\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThey made it into a laboratory for me. It honestly was like a research project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he got to Toronto as an assistant coach, Nurse brought with him his analytics-informed philosophy: layups and three-pointers were efficient shots, whereas midrange jumps were not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got a pretty strict shot spectrum that we follow,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/21\/sports\/basketball\/toronto-raptors-.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the Raptors took a mere 12.8 field-goal attempts per game in 2018-19 from the mid-range area (the zone between the key and the three-point line), compared to 20.3 per game prior to Nurse\u2019s arrival.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Managing Kawhi Leonard\u2019s Workload\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9230 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d1jxdyr49kipv5.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/413px-1_kawhi_leonard_2019_nba_finals-e1562095293834.jpg\" alt=\"Kawhi Leonard\" width=\"410\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/413px-1_kawhi_leonard_2019_nba_finals-e1562095293834.jpg 410w, https:\/\/d2re7sjnpekmig.cloudfront.net\/prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/413px-1_kawhi_leonard_2019_nba_finals-e1562095293834-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Kawhi Leonard missed 22 regular season games with no specific injury, but instead to ensure he would be healthy and rested for the playoffs \u2013 a strategy memorably termed \u201cload management\u201d \u2013 Raptors fans sometimes grumbled about not getting to see the star forward in action every night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they certainly weren\u2019t complaining when Leonard hoisted his Finals MVP trophy after a run of dominance that saw the two-time champion score the third-most points in a single postseason in NBA history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMe missing games isn\u2019t just to keep me fresh,\u201d Leonard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/basketball\/nba\/raptors-get-big-win-kawhi-leonard-playing-back-back-games\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the season. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously making sure I don\u2019t reinjure something that I was out for last year. (The Raptors medical staff) have been doing a good job of reading images and making sure that I\u2019m improving instead of declining on the health side.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, load management has everything to do with data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Raptors have been secretive about how they determined exactly when to sit Leonard, wearable GPS has empowered teams to closely monitor everything about the way a player moves to notice performance irregularities that could indicate an injury. The Raptors\u2019 crosstown counterparts, the Blue Jays, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/load-management-101-looking-at-how-the-raptors-have-treated-kawhi-leonard-1.1292598\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the popular wearable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoop.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHOOP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to monitor recovery, strain, and sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is so much data available with respect to players\u2019 health, some experts say a team Mathematician has become mandatory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn one soccer game, including all the players, there\u2019s over a million data points generated over 90 minutes,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/5181067\/load-management-101-kawhi-leonards-season\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sports Physiologist Trent Stellingwerff, a member of Canada\u2019s medical staff at numerous Olympics. \u201cAnd so in team sport, load management is incredibly complex. It\u2019s part science and part interpretation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kyle Lowry: A Star Underrated by Traditional Stats<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Toronto\u2019s decisive Game six win over Golden State, star Kyle Lowry scored 26 points, with 10 assists and seven rebounds, making it one of the best performances of the playoffs. It was a vindication for the oft-maligned point guard, but those with a mind for data analytics \u2013 including the Raptors\u2019 own management \u2013 weren\u2019t surprised by just how effective he was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you look at the traditional \u201ccounting\u201d stats, Lowry\u2019s averages over the course of his tenure with Toronto are certainly good, but not stellar: 17.4 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lowryky01.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced stats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, do a much better job of capturing his value.
