All 35,000 Canadian government access-to-information requests to go online in 2012

Several media outlets have reported that as of January 1, 2012 the Canadian government will be required to provide summaries of all access-to-information requests within 30 days of response.

It’s part of an Open Data Portal Pilot Project that underlines the Canadian government’s commitment to open government and transparency.

It would not have been possible without the Internet and fast computing speeds. This addresses the concerns outlined earlier this week by the Canadian Journalism Foundation’s panel on Freedom of Information (or not).

It looks like transparency is an idea whose time has indeed come as the Information Commissioner of Canada Suzanne Legault did say.
