Android Finally Catches up to Apple with 700,000 Apps

There are now more than 700,000 apps available for the Android platform, Google revealed today. It’s the first time ever that Google’s mobile platform has had as many apps as Apple’s iOS.

Last month, Apple announced that the App Store had 700,000 apps. Since 2007, when the iPhone launched, Apple has always had more apps than Android. But five years later, Google has managed to catch up.

One area where Google still lags, though, is in tablet-specific apps. Apple has nearly 300,000 apps built specifically for the iPad, while Android tablet users enjoy nowhere near that many.

Microsoft’s mobile platform currently has just 120,000 apps, while RIM’s BlackBerry App World has around that many too.

Globally, the smartphone market is worth an estimated $220 billion.
