Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, told customers last week that if they were experiencing reception loss when gripping the iPhone in certain ways to simply change the way they hold their phone.
This didn’t go over terribly well with frustrated consumers, however, so Apple released some “official advice”:
Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.
For those unaware of this problem, it’s do with the iPhone 4’s casing around the sides: it’s made of stainless steel and serves as its antenna. Apple sells a ”bumper” made of thin rubber that shields the sensitive area – and while this does solve many of the problems, it’s still an usual fault for the company. Previous iPhone models suffered this issue but to a near-negligible degree. For Apple, a company that has built its modern reputation on exceptional design, making an old problem worse as opposed to fixing it has confused the masses.
But hope should not be lost. According to an article in the Telegraph today, Jobs has reportedly said in an email to a customer that “There is no reception issue. Stay Tuned.” MacRumors suggested this was noteworthy because previous statements did not imply any forthcoming repairs to the problem as this one does. And Mashable has predicted this could mean a fix in the mobile devices next software update, which may come as soon as this week.
MacRumors noted that Mr Jobs’s response to their reader’s query was potentially significant because it differs from the company’s official statement on the problem. Website Mashable suggested that the new line could mean that the problem may be fixed by an iOS software update, which is expected to come as soon as this week.
