Apple Unveils iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Apple today announced what it calls the “biggest advancement in the history of iPhone” with the hotly anticipated unveiling of two new smartphone models, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

It’s a different look for the iPhone, with curved edges akin to the iPad Air. It’s thinner than previous generations, too: the 6 is less than seven millimetres thin, compared with the 5s at 7.6mm. The Plus adds just two millimetres to the thickness.

The iP6 has a 4.7-inch screen, while the Plus has a 5.5-inch screen, enterting “phablet” territory. Both screen sizes were as expected based on rumours.

New screen technology is an upgrade from Apple’s prior Retina tech. Apple is calling the superior displays on the iP6 and Plus “Retina HD.” The 6 Plus has 185% more pixels than the 5S, Apple’s previou flagship model.

Due to the larger screens, Apple has now introduced landscape mode for the homescreen and certain apps such as messages.

The new iPhones are powered by Apple’s new A8 chip, which the company says boosts processor power by 50 times and graphics by 84 times. The devices will play games at a higher resolution than Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4.

The smartphones’ coprocessor, the M8, continuously measures motion data from the accelerometer, gryoscope, and compass, and the phones also boast barometers that sense air pressure to measure relative elevation—all of which will help power Apple’s HealthKit platform. ” iPhone can now tell if you’re going up molehills, mountains, and everything in between,” says Apple.

Apple says the wifi and LTE speeds on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are both significantly faster than on the iPhone 5s. The devices’ cameras are also much improved—still at eight megapixels, including Focus Pixels, technology previously only found in professional-grade DSLR cameras. And video can be shot at 1080p at 60 frames per second, and slow-motion video at up to 240 frames per second. Front camera now offers i high-def FaceTime.

“The iPhone is the most loved smartphone in the world with the highest customer satisfaction in the industry and we are making it much better in every way. Only Apple can combine the best hardware, software and services at this unprecedented level and we think customers are going to love it,” says Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Apple’s new iPhone cases will be available in six colours: black, blue, green, grey, pink, and red.

Both models will be available in Canada on Friday, September 19. iOS 8 will be available for download on September 17.
