Banff Meet-up Series Kicks off in Calgary! Now on to Edmonton and Vancouver!

The 2011 Banff World Media Festival kicked off its Banff Meet-up series in Calgary last night at Belgo Brasserie.

The event was well attended by Calgarians representing a broad range of sectors that are experiencing a tremendous growth as a result of the convergence between technology and entertainment.  Digital Alberta, AMPIA and the Calgary Film Commission/Calgary Economic Development were some of the industry associations in attendance. Individuals representing mobile, social media, film and television, software developers, entrepreneurs and innovators gathered for conversation and a brief presentation on Canada’s digital landscape.

“It was great to come out and meet people who are passionate about the growth of the entertainment and technology industries in Alberta,” said Christian Maclean, founder and CEO of Cardinal Media Technologies, a social music sharing and insight platform for iPhone users and Advisory Board Member of Start-up Calgary. “We’re really motivated to check out some of the sessions at this year’s Banff World Media Festival.  For us, Banff is one of the best opportunities to meet with potential clients and partners.  It’s a world class event – right in our own back yard.”

The comScore 2010 Canada Digital Year in Review report, released earlier this month, highlights how Canadians are the most engaged online audience globally.  We rank highest in amount of time we spend consuming online content.  The opportunity to deliver the best entertainment experience and monetize that with sustainable business models is what this year’s Banff event will focus on.

“Digital advertising dollars are being spent in many ways to support content and content producers are a never-ending source of creativity and innovation,” said Jory Groberman, VP- Business Development,  for Achilles Media, producer of the Banff World Media Event.  “In addition to a great line up of speakers, this year’s event will offer a marketplace of opportunity for industry to connect, do business and of course have fun.”

This inaugural Meet-up series will be in Edmonton this evening and Vancouver on Thursday.  Visit for more information.
