Beagle, a Sensor System to Measure Environmental Factors in the Home

Like many new technologies, the Beagle one was created because of disappointment. Disappointment with the options in the marketplace.

The Beagle is a modular sensor system designed to be used in the home. It can detect things like air quality, noise and light.

The team behind the device has been interested in the relationship between indoor environments and health but it didn’t really come together until one the company’s co-founders bought a device to measure environmental factors in his home, says Kathryn Baylis, the chief experience officer at Beagle Sense.

The device her colleague both turned out to be an expensive disappointment that stopped working after six months.

“A lot of this came out of personal need,” Baylis says. “We’re just really interested in the data we can collect from our homes. We’re all fairly health conscious as well, so it really struck a chord with us that we found this need in the market.”

The device itself is small, around the shape and size of a hockey puck

“It’s a modular system. We have seven different types of sensors and they’re all in individual sensor units,” Baylis says.

It can measure CO2 levels; temperature; outdoor noise and indoor noise; air pressure; humidity or light and Baylis says more sensor are in the works.

She says those factors can affect quality of life and being aware of them can improve the health of users.

“It’s really about little tweaks that you can make,” she says. “The little things like opening a window, or adjusting your temperature, or measuring how much light comes in while you sleep can really make a huge difference in quality of life and wellbeing.”

It can also help users keep an eye on their home when they’re away, monitoring things like humidity levels, to keep an eye on the potential for mould buildup and noise.

“If you’re an Airbnb host, there’s also quite a range of options there to keep your pulse on what’s going on in your house while you’re not there,” Baylis says.

The team behind the device has experience with building both IoT products and software startups. It includes co-founders of Piper, a crowdfunded home security system, and Magmic, a mobile games developer.

Right now, the team is looking to get funding through Kickstarter to take their product from proof-of-concept to reality and they’re hoping they can have it manufactured completely in Canada.

They’re looking to raise $65,000. With just under two weeks to go, they’re at a little under $28,000.

A base station and single sensor will cost backers $59. With two sensors it’s $89.
