Who is the Best Canadian Startup of 2012?

Finalists have been selected for this year’s Canadian Startup Awards and voting is now open.

Here’s a quick rundown of the six finalists competing for the title of Best Overall Canadian Startup of 2012.


Shopify, based in Ottawa, is an ecommerce platform that allows individuals and businesses to create online stores. Recently named Canada’s smartest company. Has raised $22 million in funding.


Indochino, based in Vancouver, sells tailored men’s clothing online. Has partnered with Canadian sports legend Steve Nash. Was named one of BC’s most innovative companies in 2011.


500px, based in Toronto, is an online community built for discovering, sharing, buying, and selling photographs. Ranked number one in the last Canadian Startup Index. Has been steadily winning users from Flickr.


Payfirma, based in Vancouver, helps businesses accept payments in their store, online, and on their mobile devices. Won Best New Canadian Startup last year. Doesn’t neglect the BlackBerry platform.


Wave, based in Toronto, is a cloud-based accounting solution for small businesses. The startup expanded into the US very quickly. Recently rebranded.


Vidyard, based in Waterloo, helps people and companies put video on their websites. Platform sees one million plays per day. Raised money from a cofounder of YouTube.
