Best Companies to work for in BC

Last June, Caliber Leadership Systems asked Techvibes to spread the word regarding their survey for BC Business Magazine’s annual Best Companies to work for in BC issue  and we were happy to help get the word out. Since they opened up the survey to companies with fewer than 100 employees this year, they needed a way to contact smaller companies that were under the radar. Another welcome change this year was a tweak to their survey to focus on four key areas of talent management – talent systems, employee engagement, leadership dynamics and organizational culture.

In their survey of small companies, 10 out of 38 polled made it to the top quartile. These top performers ranged in size from 35 to 97 employees and represent an array of industries including finance, manufacturing, professional services and technology. Victoria’s AbeBooks stood out from the pack again (they’ve been one of Macleans Magazine’s Top 100 employers for the past five years) and they’re profiled in the month’s issue.

Forty-four companies took part in the survey of large organizations, and 11 landed in the top quartile. Among those companies, employees numbered from 100 to 1,372, with an average size of 210.  Yaletown’s Next Level Games got the nod as a top employer with over 100 employees. When presented with the award at Monday night’s reception, the Next Level rep warned the award presenter, Microsoft Canada President Phil Sorgen, not to “poach any of their coders”. Their profile in BC Business is worth a read – apparently office allocation isn’t based on seniority but rather on who’s the loudest.
