BlackBerry’s popular BlackBerry Messenger service will be available for Google’s Android on September and Apple’s iOS on September 22.
For the first time ever, BBM will be available to users outside of the BlackBerry platform. According to BlackBerry, customers will be able to download BBM by visiting BBM.com from their smartphone browser.
BBM for Android and iOS will be more limited than it is on BlackBerry 10, focusing only on the service’s core chat features. It will run on iOS 6 or newer for iPhones and on Android 4.0 or newer for Google-powered devices. More features will be added in the future, the Waterloo-based smartphone pioneer says.
“BBM will continue to evolve quickly. Later this year, BBM Channels will provide a forum for active, real conversations between you and the people, brands, celebrities, artists, service providers, communities and more, that matter to you. In addition, BBM Video calling and BBM Voice calling are planned for availability for Android and iPhone in a future version,” the company noted.
BBM has more than 60 million monthly active customers on BlackBerry already. BBM customers collectively send and receive more than a billion messages each day.
