Today Waterloo’s HYPERDRIVE reminded us that applications for their fifth cohort are open until Novermber 30th and that this time around they will be championing female co-founders.
According to a blog post today, “there is a new basis for companies looking to apply to Communitech’s HYPERDRIVE accelerator” and the accelerator is now working with a new investment thesis that they “believe will best support and grow the Waterloo Region ecosystem by tapping into the community’s strengths.”
HYPERDRIVE will now focus on technology verticals that promise strong growth and match the strengths of the Waterloo Region tech ecosystem. HYPERDRIVE’s core verticals will be education, advertising, finance and web-enabled hardware.
HYPERDRIVE will have a new focus revenue as well. “How we measure revenue is company specific, but we believe most, if not all, problems within startups can be resolved by working towards consistent and accelerated revenue growth.”
But most importantly today, they announced that they will do their best to level the playing field for women in the male-dominated startup world.

“We believe startup teams perform better when they include men AND women. Statistics firmly suggest that women improve the performance of tech companies, but there has been little progress in bringing female perspectives to the tech table. HYPERDRIVE will therefore give priority to companies with female co-founders.”
