Canadian gamers are turning more and more toward mobile and social gaming experiences

The Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC) has released this year’s Essential Facts, an annually published report on the Canadian computer and video game industry. ESAC’s 2010 Essential Facts reveals that nearly 40% of gamers are spending more time playing social games—games through social networking websites, like Farmville on Facebook.

“Social games are a growing part of the Canadian gamer’s repertoire – especially for women and teen girls – but they are only one of the many types of games that Canadians enjoy,” says Danielle Parr, Executive Director of ESAC. “While we’re seeing a shift in how Canadians are playing games particularly towards online games, console and computer games remain the principal way to play.”

Other stats:

  • Seven percent of gamers use a mobile device most often to play video games. (This number eclipses last year’s percentage of four, more evidence of mobile’s explosive growth.)
  • More than three-quarters of gamers use the internet to connect with other gamers in-game.
  • One third of adult women, 37 percent of teenage girls, and one quarter of girls under 12 and under play social games.

Their popularity is likely due to that fact that most are free, highly accessible for anyone, playable on-the-go, simple to learn, and addictive (by design).
