Millions of Canadian Kids Consuming Racist and Sexist Content Daily, Survey Shows

One in three Canadian kids read racist or sexist content on the internet every day, a new study reveals.

MediaSmarts, which conducted a survey of Canadian kids, found that 80% from grades four through 11 have encountered such content at least once, with more than half of Grade 11 students reading such content daily.

More than three-quarters of kids admitted to calling other students names online, but just 5% of girls and 17% of boys admitted to racial or ethnic slurs, according to MediaSmarts.

The survey showed 44% agreed with this statement: “my friends and I say racist and sexist things to each other online, but we don’t mean anything by it.”
