Hardt founded ActiveState in Vancouver, which grew to become a leader in dev tools for open source programming languages. While there, he led the port of Perl to Windows, the first scripting language support of the Microsoft platform. He also oversaw the port of Perl and Python to .NET. In the late nineties his team applied Perl’s strength at text processing to filtering email and built a popular app, PerlMx, that evolved into PureMessage, enterprise spam filtering software which was subsequently sold by ActiveState to Sophos, a European security software company, in 2003.

Hardt was also Founder & CEO at Sxip Identity and is currently Partner Architect at Microsoft in Bellevue.
