Edmonton’s BioWare Creates a Futuristic Vancouver Setting for Final Chapter of Mass Effect 3

Edmonton-based game developer BioWare has included a futuristic Vancouver in the third and final instalment of its popular Mass Effect series. The company wanted to keep the game’s setting on Earth this time, and patriotism set in.

“We’re a Canadian company, so we should make it a Canadian city,” Derek Watts, art director at BioWare, told the Globe and Mail. “Vancouver had just finished the Olympics, so we set it in Vancouver.”

Mass Effect will portray Vancouver in 200 years after it’s invaded by monstrous Reaper aliens. But iconic landmarks, such as Canada Place, will still be mostly recognizable.
