Facebook Social Plugins: The Globe & Mail and NHL integrate early

Today at the f8 Facebook Developer Conference, Mark Zuckerberg presented his keynote address outlining all of the new and exciting things happening on Facebook.  Here’s a snippet of his keynote blog post titled Building the Social Web Together:

Today at our third f8, we are making it so all websites can work together to build a more comprehensive map of connections and create better, more social experiences for everyone. We have redesigned Facebook Platform to offer a simple set of tools that sites around the web can use to personalize experiences and build out the graph of connections people are making.

This next version of Facebook Platform puts people at the center of the web. It lets you shape your experiences online and make them more social. For example, if you like a band on Pandora, that information can become part of the graph so that later if you visit a concert site, the site can tell you when the band you like is coming to your area. The power of the open graph is that it helps to create a smarter, personalized web that gets better with every action taken.

As a tech blog focused on Canada, it’s always interesting to look for Canadian connections and a couple have already been announced today.

The Globe and Mail and the National Hockey League announced this morning that they will be leveraging Facebook’s new Social Plugins. 

Social Plugins provide users with instant personalization and a whole new social experience on a website. Through a new set of simple tools (Like, Activity Stream, Recommendations and Social Bar) that can be dropped into any website, publishers can provide instantly personalized and social experiences.

The Globe and Mail will be using Facebook’s new Social Plugins to allow readers to connect with millions of Facebook users, share and recommend content and follow friends’ activities and “Likes”, without leaving Globeandmail.com.

And starting today, visitors to NHL.com can sign into NHL.com with their Facebook login and access five Facebook Social Plugins such as the Like button, Recommendations, and Activity Feed on NHL.com. As a result, fans can interact with any piece of NHL content and then share it back to Facebook and its 400 million-plus users.

According to the NHL’s press release, integrating Facebook into NHL.com is an important component of the League’s “Hockey Marketplace” syndication strategy, which is building windows into NHL.com on 3rd party sites such as YouTube, Hulu, SB Nation, Yardbarker, Bleacher Report and The Hockey News.
