Figure 1, an ‘Instagram for Doctors,’ Raises $4 Million from Union Square Ventures and Others

A Toronto-based medical photo sharing app has raised $4 million in financing.

Figure 1 today raised $4 million in a round led Union Square Ventures for its app that, at 125,000 users, is drawing medical professionals in like a magnet. The app is drawing a million photo views every day and comments from medical professionals have topped 60,000.

According to Fortune, who broke news on the raise, Figure 1 offers a visual shorthand for healthcare professionals looking to compare notes: it’s a social network of images of medical injuries that are user-tagged by anatomy (brain, lower limb) and specialty (pediatrics, cardiology)—an “Instagram for doctors.”

The company’s earlier backers, Version One Ventures and Rho Canada Ventures, also participated in this latest round. The company was named to the Techvibes 20 in April.

The app launched two years ago in 2012 and so far has enjoyed minimal competition, but Fortune predicts the space to heat up soon. The app was founded by Joshua Landy, Richard Penner, Gregory Levey.
