Some former BlackBerry employees who were laid off during the company’s multi-year restructuring are waiting hopefully to be hired by one of the Waterloo region’s many startups. Others are launching startups themselves.
Peter Mankowski was laid off in June but has already launched CLEO Collar, which makes wearable pet technology. Ryan Hickey, who spent 15 years at BlackBerry, this year launched Eleven-x, which specializes in wireless tech. Noushad Naqvi launched SimSim Labs. “BlackBerry’s losses are gains for Canada’s entrepreneurial community,” writes Brenda Bouw in The Globe and Mail.
