Jordan Behan of Vancouver’s stealth startup Strutta is spearheading a Gastown hardware drive for Free Geek Vancouver. Next Friday, December 7th, the Hardware Drive truck will make the rounds through Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, collecting any donations of used computers, monitors, printers, or peripherals. The list of acceptable items is broad: “They’re really on the hunt for a server rack” Jordan writes.
Free Geek Vancouver is a non-profit that recycles used hardware to be given back to volunteers or other non-profit organizations. Started just over a year ago, Free Geek has maintained great momentum in their mission to “help the needy get nerdy”. In addition to hardware recycling, it also runs Linux install workshops, movie nights, and runs booths at local community events. In June, they moved into their current shop at 117 East 2nd Avenue, but the growth of their operations has them currently securing a new, larger space.A thorough list of what items Free Geek accepts, along with more information about the organization, is available on their site at freegeekvancouver.org. To request that the Hardware Drive truck stop at your office, email Jordan[at]strutta.com.
