How Apps Have Changed the Way We Work

With a growing number of professionals working outside the main office at least some of the time, use of remote working tools has radically increased.

A staggering 84% of workers have used at least one tool enabling remote working in the previous month, according to a survey by global workplace provider Regus. The global survey included more than 2,600 Canadian respondents.

Canadian respondents highlighted that it is the remote worker who is strongly driving the need of cloud applications that provide them with cost-effective access to office tools wherever they are (85%).

But online tools are also helping to ease some of the other pain traditionally associated with remote working, especially through the proliferation of efficient and secure document sharing services.

The research shows that Dropbox is the most commonly used online file-sharing service, used by 60% of professionals, followed by Google Drive (41%) and TeamViewer (17%).

Another challenge remote workers face is feeling out of touch with colleagues when they are not in the office. Instant Messaging tools and VoIP, however, are revolutionizing the way workers communicate and shows remote workers they are available, connected and immediately responsive.

The research found the most popular VoIP Messaging application is Skype, used by 61% of Canadian respondents in the previous month. Facebook Messenger (44%) and Viber (11%) follow.

Globally, WhatsApp is the most popular Instant Messaging app for smartphone, used by 54% of workers once a month or more; in Canada however the app isn’t as popular among professionals with only 26% using it. Microsoft remote desktop is the most remote desktop used by Canadians (17%).

Just 16% of Canadian professionals said they had not used an instant messaging tool in the past month.

“The growth in instant messaging apps and document-sharing services are playing an enormous role in helping more people to work flexibly, by enabling more reliable and secure ways of communicating with colleagues and sharing files, from wherever people may be working,” said Wayne Berger, VP of Regus Canada. “This means they can be fully operative even when they are not in the office and in fact, they can save time spent travelling into the office or to and from meetings by working closer to home and so boost productivity.”
