Launch Academy Announces Winners of the 2013 Student Startup Challenge

Launch Academy announced today the winners of their Student Startup Challenge.

Launched in mid-April, the Student Startup Challenge (SSC) encouraged student entrepreneurs to pitch their startup ideas and compete for $5,000 in cash prizes, 3 months free office space and mentorship, and up to $900,000 in startup perks.

As the competition wrapped up, the SSC site profiled 37 startups that went on to rack up 5,500 votes. After reviewing each startup application, the judges – Mike Edwards of LX Ventures, Ray Walia of Launch Academy, and Boris Wertz of Version One Ventures – selected the top 5 startups and they are:

  • Cognilab – a virtual laboratory that makes research easy.
  • CADTOHAND – a web service for home 3D printer owners to search, print and review CAD designs.
  • – allows students to get help from people at their school, classes, and nearby networks, and to earn money helping others, over the phone.
  • Grassroots Analytics – provides independent business with the power of analytics to convert data into insights.
  • Turnyp: enables restaurants and franchises to efficiently target choicely eaters. Turnyp promotes restaurant dishes so that they match the nutritional needs and dietary preferences of potential customers.

In addition to mentorship from some of the best and brightest entrepreneurs, investors and professionals, the top 5 student teams will receive three months of free working space in Vancouver’s premier technology hub, Launch Academy, in order to help bring their ideas to life.

At the conclusion of their three month residency at Launch Academy, the cohort will have the chance to pitch their ideas to investors and compete for a $5,000 cash prize (sponsored by LX Ventures).

“LX Ventures is proud to support young entrepreneurs.” said Mike Edwards, CEO and President of LX Ventures. “Innovation and progress need to be nurtured from an early stage. That is why we are always looking for opportunities to help support young entrepreneurial talent through various avenues in order to bring new ideas to light.”
