Lighting up Niagara Falls… with your brain!

Vancouverites, take heart. While visitors to the upcoming Olympics will soon clog every roadway and otherwise disrupt the normal flow of everyday life in “the greatest place on Earth,” residents of the 2010 showcase city will soon be able to jerk around visitors to Niagara Falls using ONLY THEIR MINDS.

Sound crazy? Well, yes, of course it does. But InteraXon, a company that specializes in brain-computer interfaces and “thought controlled computing” plans to soon install a light show at the falls called “Bright Ideas,” which will read the electrical impulses of the brains of participants in Vancouver and then vary the intensity of the lights based on their level of concentration.

That sounds like (and frankly is) a pretty flippant user of thought-reading technology, but there’s actually real work being done in labs all over the world to help amputees control artificial limbs, type using only mind control and even read a cat’s visual cortex
