Local Student Project an Honoree at Webby Awards

A few local students enrolled in the Masters of Digital Media Program can be very proud.  Their project Moviesphere, in collaboration with Telefonica, has been selected as an Official Honoree for the Integrated Mobile Experience category in the 13th Annual Webby Awards.

“Movisphere” is a multi-platform, virtual world arcade accessible by and between computer and mobile technology.  Based on a microtransactional model, this virtual world works in a persistent universe where users can play MMOGs (massively multiplayer online games) with people from around the world and seamlessly switch between their mobile and desktop/laptop environments.  Unlike other MMOGs which are either played on a computer or with a cell phone, this innovative project pushes the envelope in bridging the two worlds together.

The Official Honoree distinction is awarded to the top 15% of all work entered. Nearly 10,000 entries were received from more than 60 countries and it competed against the largest companies in the world. Fellow honorees include Nike, Nokia and Adidas. The project team includes Elmar dela Cruz, McKane Lee, Karthik Venkateshan and Bill Zhao, while the Telefonica project managers Juan Jorda del Amo and Alberto Lumbreras and MDM faculty Jeremy Gibson and Ian Verchere.
