Montreal’s International Mutek Festival Goes Virtual, Seeks Funding on Kickstarter

Since 2000, Montreal’s International Mutek festival has been building an impressive name for itself in digital creativity and electronic music by stepping things up to the next level. The 13th edition will take place from May 30 to June 3 and will hopefully be reaching an exponentially wider audience.

The Mutek team have kicked off a Kickstarter project that will help them launch what they’re calling a Virtual Festival Studio. They’re asking for $20,000 before May 16 to help them “pay for the core technical infrastructure required to broadcast live events from concert halls and studio, and secure the production crew required to translate this five-day event into a groundbreaking virtual experience.”

Already a mecca for interactive animation and VJing, Mutek intends to add another layer to the festival-goer’s experience by providing mobile multi-media components, exclusive artist interviews playing simultaneously with the sets, behind-the-scene workshops and live-streaming content through Mutek’s TV and FM networks. The group also intends to archive the content as a whole and let it grow and evolve even after the festival’s blasted its last tunes.

With the “MU” in the not-for-profit’s name standing for “mutation,” the team is looking to change the way digital festivals are experienced all the while keeping its focus on programming that “create(s) a sonic space that can support innovation in new electronic music and digital art.”  They’ve raised a bit over $2,500 to date, with a little over two weeks to go before the Kickstarter deadline.

Their move follows in the footsteps of festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza, who introduced live-streaming after having struck a deal with YouTube in 2011. But Mutek hopes to do more than live-stream by providing unique and creative digital mobile content through the VFS. Until then, the city’s digital art and electronic music fans will most certainly be waiting with bated breath to see what Mutek’s creative innovators will have thought up.
