Montreal’s microblogging StatusNet raises $875K

TechCrunch reported this morning that Montreal-based StatusNet is closing an $875K seed round today with Montreal Startup, iNovia Capital, and Fotolia co-founder Oleg Tscheltzoff.

StatusNet changed its name a few weeks ago from Control Yourself and is the company behind the open-source microblogging service

StatusNet wants to become the WordPress of microblogging. It created an open-source microblogging software platform which anyone can download and run on their own servers. Now, it is working on a hosted version of, currently in private beta. raised a previous seed round of $150K from Montreal Startup in January, 2009.
