Another online security fail in Canada: this time it’s automaker Honda

Is May the official month of security breaches or something?

Honda Canada has come clean that personal information was stolen from its system, compromising the data of thousands of customers who registered on its myHonda website.

Names, addresses, vehicle identification numbers, and Honda Financial Services account numbers were accessed, but not birth dates, credit card numbers and bank account numbers.

“Honda sincerely apologizes for this incident and we are working diligently to protect your information and improve our data security procedures,” the company has stated. “Honda does not share its customer information with unauthorized third parties and does not contact customers asking for financial information,” the company said.

The breach follows multiple incidents with Sony’s PlayStation Network earlier this month.

Jennifer Stoddart, Canada’s privacy commissioner, recently called for the power to impose “attention-getting fines” when large corporations fail to protect customers’ private data.
