More Than One in Five Consumers Still Choosing to Buy ‘Dumb’ Phones, Study Suggests

It’s hard for anyone who now owns a smartphone to imagine not owning one.

Similarly it’s difficult to fathom anyone upgrading an old device to opt for a “dumb” phone, or non-smartphone—especially when there are affordable entry-level options from every brand, even Apple.

But according to new data from Nielsen, 11% of mobile subscribers replaced or upgraded their handsets in the third quarter of 2013—and roughly one in five still chose to forego smartphones.

Among those who did buy smartphones, nine out of 10 chose Android or iPhone devices, which is bad news for BlackBerry.
