News in Short: White iPhone further delayed, Amazon wants to broaden its line of gadgets

White iPhone further delayed

UK-based mobile network Orange sent an email to its customers notifying them that the white iPhone 4 will not be available until the end of 2010:

We wanted to let you know that there won’t be any white iPhone 4’s in the UK until the end of the year.

If you’re happy to wait another few months we’ll let you know as soon as they’re back in stock.

My question is… by then, won’t we be lining up for the iPhone 10?

Amazon wants to sell more than just Kindles

Lab 126, a subsidiary of which develops the Kindle, may be soon building other gadgets for Amazon. From NY Times:

According to people with direct knowledge of the company’s plans, who declined to be identified because they are not authorized to speak publicly about Amazon’s internal workings and unannounced products, Lab 126 has been looking into building other gadgets that it could sell to consumers.

One of those people said building more hardware products would be a means to an end. This person said Amazon wants to make more devices for consumers that would enable simple purchasing of Amazon content including its digital booksmusic and movie rentals and purchases.

“[Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’] original goal for the lab was to build a range of other devices,” said one person. “There was talk of music players and other electronics.”

This person also said Lab 126 briefly discussed entering the mobile phone market to compete with Apple and Google. Last year, Amazon acquired Touchco, a multitouch hardware company.

The article goes on to say that internally, Amazon executives have been “frustrated with other companies aggressively entering the digital content business,” but that the execs were “prepared to do whatever it takes” to retain Amazon’s major player status in digital content sales.
