Ottawa firm helps take down massive botnet

Today’s Ottawa Citizen has a story about an Ottawa security firm that helped take down a massive worldwide botnet.

The Mariposa botnet was comprised of 13 million compromised computers which were being used by hackers to steal personal information.

Ottawa firm Defence Intelligence develops software for monitoring network traffic which provided them with information useful to the FBI and Spanish police to shut down this particular botnet.

Despite the company’s major win against hackers, Defence Intelligence CEO Christopher Davies makes a complaint in the story that will be familiar to most Canadian start-ups: the dearth of venture capital funding in Canada.

Davies notes that with better funding and more staff, his company could be taking out a botnet per month instead of one per year.
