Payless ShoeSource has apparently democratized fashion. How you may ask? Well, the only thing I can think of is the fact that their shoe racks are divided into sizes and so even my elephant size 11 feet can enjoy affordable footwear.
Moreover, just when I thought my 12 dollar boots were a steal, on April 8th, Payless announced the launch of a new SMS based discount offer program.
Just text AMOUR in Quebec (which means love in French, do you not love your shoes?), and PAYLESS for the rest of Canada to 77777 (because 696969, 66666 and LOVE were obviously taken), and then you receive discount offers off of your next shoe purchase.
For now until May 31/2010, texters will receive 20 per cent off. You just have to show the received text at the register. No more clipping coupons, which is so 1999, meanwhile printing off emails with barcodes, is so 2006. Welcome to 2010, where you can flash your text and get a discount.
I know I will be feeling a little silly asking the sales girl to please note my SMS coupon. The funny thing is, I know I am more likely to check in to foursquare while in Payless than text in to get a discount. So why not capitalize on Foursquare addicts like myself? It would be amazing to check in and then automatically get sent a direct message via Twitter with a link to a coupon. It’s hard to say no to “buy one get one free” shoes when you’ve already checked in!
Fortunately, those unlimited text packages from the hot new WIND Mobile have definitely saved the day. I can now opt in to all discounts although there is a limit of one per customer.
There are many SMS discount programs out there but how effective are they? Will Canadians actually use this service?
