It seems that augmented reality has been getting increasingly popular, with more and more applications are starting to add various forms of AR capabilities into their apps. Today Multiplied Media Corporation, a self-described leader in the field of mobile local searchservices, announced Poynt360 an addition to their existing Poynt local search application for iPhone. The addition of Poynt360 allows users to search nearby businesses, people, theatres and restaurants by looking through their cameras phone.
Multiplied Media held a compitition to name the 360 feature within their app. From their press release:
The 360° title was submitted by Gillian Bailey, a Poynt user who entered the name suggestion during the Augment Your Reality Sweepstakes. As part of her prize package Gillian is receiving an all expense paid trip for two to New York City, including airfare, accommodations and $2,500 in spending money. The grand prize also includes the implementation of the 360° name within the Poynt application.
“I thought about what it is that the augmented reality feature does and how it shows me what is all around me,” said Gillian Bailey, winner of the Augment Your Reality Contest. “Poynt is a great application for finding what is close by and getting me to where I want to go. I’m looking forward to my trip to New York City and using Poynt in the Big Apple.”
The updated Poynt is available now in the iTunes app store and for modern BlackBerry phones through BlackBerry’s App World store or through direct download via m.poynt.com. With the addition of the 360 view Poynt joins a small but growing group of applications that are implementing augmented reality features since Apple allowed developers access to the camera, compas and GPS features of the phone in last year’s iPhone OS 3.0.
