RIM Releases BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1

Today Research In Motion released a software update for its tablet.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 is a free update that mostly just enhances existing features of the device, which shipped only 130,000 units last quarter despite selling at a discount of more than 60%.

With OS 2.1, customers will now have the ability to secure all data on the tablet; the enterprise-grade encryption can now be extended to secure personal data stored on the device. They can also text via SMS using the new version of BlackBerry Bridge (which requires a separate download via App World). And they can use the Messages, Contacts and Calendar apps in Portrait mode.

The PlayBook is now better equipped for the enterprise, too, with Mobile Fusion integration.
