Rogers once again disobeys rules, unfairly throttles internet speeds for third time in three months

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has written to Rogers Communications. The address raises the issue of customer complaints that the major internet service provider has been slowing the speeds of “time sensitive audio [and] video traffic.”

This is the third time in just three months that the telco giant has been caught disobediently throttling internet speeds. In December, and again in January, the CRTC address Rogers specifically over its anti-competitive practices. However, these have been nothing more than slaps on the wrist—no real action has yet been taken to truly stop Rogers.

The Coalition has been pushing Industry Minister Tony Clement to ask the CRTC to enforce its Internet openness regulations, which clearly state that ISPs cannot discriminate against online content or applications by slowing or blocking them, for over a year.

“It’s clear that changes must be made,” said SaveOurNet co-founder Steve Anderson. “Internet openness regulations are in place, and still Big Telecom feels free to engage in discriminatory practices. It is time for policymakers to stop coddling big industry players, and begin to protect citizens’ communications interests.”
