Sony Sells One Million PS4 Consoles in 24 Hours

Sony Computer Entertainment revealed this morning that its PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system sold one million units in the first 24 hours of availability.

The gaming console went on sale last Friday for $399. This Friday competing console Xbox One, made by Microsoft, launches in Canada for $499.

Sony hopes to sell five million units by March. It sold 400,000 PS3 units in the first 24 hours of that product’s launch and 3.5 million in the same time period it hopes to sell five million. So far 80 million PS3 units have been sold.

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

Sony launched the first PlayStation in 1994.
